Module No. 11: Concept of Diversity

Activity 1: Answer the following questions

1. What types of children does Miss Madeline have?

 Ms. Madeline, a Special Education teacher, handles 5 students from 7:30 to 10:00 in
the morning. Joshua 17 years old; Joven is 8; Steve, 6; Ryan, 5 and RG, 7.
Assessment results for Joshua and Joven indicated an indicated of global
development delay. Steve was assessed as exhibiting attention deficit hyperactive
disorder. Ryan and RG have pervasive developmental delay.

2. In what ways are the children diverse?

 Joshua and Joven are the withdrawn type. Receptive and expressive language for
both are developmentally appropriate. While Joshua can initiate communication with
the teacher, Miss Madeline find it difficult to let Joshua talk or respond even to a
simple greetings like Good morning

3. Ryan and RG were both assessed having autism spectrum disorder. What do you
suppose make him different from each other although their disabilities are
similar?
 Autism is a spectrum of disorders having a common core of symptoms, rather than a
singular disorder. Every person on the autism spectrum struggles with social
interaction, empathy, communication, and flexibility to some degree. However, the
severity of disability and the combination of symptoms experienced by each
individual varies greatly. In fact, two children with the same diagnoses may exhibit
vastly diverse behaviors and talents. You may hear terminology like high-functioning
autism, atypical autism, autism spectrum disorder, and pervasive developmental
disorder if you're a parent coping with a child on the autism spectrum. Not only
because there are so many of them, but also because doctors, therapists, and other
parents may use them.

4. What will be your greatest challenge if you were Miss Madeline?

 If I were Ms. Madeline my greatest challenge is that how I manage the 5 students
with developmental delay or disabilities. It’s not easy to handle those children
especially there are 5.

Activity 2.

A. Reflect and Apply

B. Why is important for every teacher to understand learning diversity?

 Diversity education introduces pupils to a variety of cultural and social groups,
preparing them to be better citizens in their communities. These culturally sensitive
teaching practices will assist you in promoting classroom diversity.

Activity 3

1. Which dimension of your behavior has been significantly influenced by the culture
of your community? Explain your answer.
 The community is a crucial component that influences one's conduct, and it
frequently manipulates people's opinions and actions. The way a person responds to
a situation, or ideas and behaviors to satisfy the needs of the community, perceived
authority, social role, or minority within a group exercising influence over the majority
are all examples of community. The majority of our actions are influenced by the
community on a daily basis. For example, a student's behavior may be adjusted to
resemble that of the other students in the class. Furthermore, requests from those
perceived to be in positions of power have an impact on us. For example, an
employee will obey his managers' directions in order to please them.

2. As a teacher why is it important for you to fully understand the diversity of

children especially the children with disabilities?
 Diversity education introduces pupils to a variety of cultural and social groups,
preparing them to be better citizens in their communities. These culturally sensitive
teaching practices will assist you in promoting classroom diversity.

Module 12: Students with Physical Disabilities, Health impairments, and severe
disabilities

Activities
Test on content knowledge
1. Describe the skeletal system and muscle system of the body. What is the
importance of keeping the muscles bones healthy?
 Bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissues make up your
musculoskeletal system. Your muscles and other soft tissues are supported by your
bones. They support your body's weight, keep your posture, and let you to move.

2. What are the differences between orthopedic and neurological impairments?

 Congenital orthopedic disorders may include clubfoot, hip dysplasia, and scoliosis,
while musculoskeletal injuries usually result from strenuous activity and include
broken bones, sprains and strains, and bruises. Congenital neurological disorders
may include cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and spina bifida. Clubfoot, hip dysplasia, and
scoliosis are examples of congenital orthopedic diseases, while musculoskeletal
injuries commonly occur as a result of vigorous activity and include fractured bones,
sprains and strains, and bruises. Cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and spina bifida are
examples of congenital neurological disorders.

3. Enumerate the common types of:

 Physical disabilities
 Cerebral Palsy- is a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move and
maintain balance and posture
 Stroke- is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain
 Spina Bifida- is a condition that affects the spine and is usually apparent at birth
 Arthritis- is the swelling and tenderness of one or more joints
 Spinal Cord Injury- Extreme back pain or pressure in your neck, head or back
 Epilepsy- is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which brain
activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior,
sensations and sometimes loss of awareness.
 Muscular Dystrophy - is a group of diseases that cause progressive weakness
and loss of muscle mass.

 Health Impairments
 ADD and AH/HD.
 Diabetes.
 Epilepsy.
 Heart conditions.
 Hemophilia.
 Lead poisoning.
 Leukemia.

 Severe disabilities
 Arthritis
 heart disease
