Communication Breakdowns in the Debate Mare at Pare

In the Debate Mare at Pare, there is a side where they approve on endorsing politicians while
the other candidates have an opposite stand. We are going to assess the communication
breakdowns present in the debate. First, what is communication breakdown? Communication
breakdown is the means of a failure in exchanging information and it also can be unsuccessful
communication. The communication breakdown we notice on the debate was the emotional
barrier, when Father Anton Pascual was done stating his side about endorsing politicians,
Brother Eli Soriano also stated his side but it was with powerful emotions and a locked on mind
set. Another communication breakdown present in the debate was the cultural barrier, it is also
the time where Brother Eli Soriano was staying on his intrinsic values and beliefs. He believed
that the church should not endorse politicians because he believed that the church has nothing to
do with the government’s graft and corruption.
Debates are supposed to be a fruitful discourse about a particular point of view on an issue or
idea; however, the debate we are witnessing does not appear to reflect its purpose. A necessary
factor in debates is comprehension and analysis. At the start of the debate, the information
exchange is harmonious, but the answers or feedback of the other party does not match nor
answer the question thrown by the opposing party. Another shortcoming in the debate that
contributes to the breakdown in communication is the overlapping of both sides. A particular
party has a habit of interrupting what the other party is saying; the cutting of the discourse is
primarily responsible for the breakdown. Refusing to fully listen to what others are saying is a
way of blocking the exchange of Information therefore leading to misunderstanding and wrong
feedback. Finally, both parties' statements appear to be devoid of supporting documentation and
factual reasoning. Some members of the opposing party make false statements that are biased in
their favor. Furthermore, philosophical statements that are unrelated to the topic are a factor;
after all, it is possible to explain a concept in a logical manner without making unnecessary
remarks. In the end the following barriers in communication are observed during the debate:
emotional barriers, linguistic barriers, cultural barriers, and paralanguage.
