Group 1 – Performance Task in General

Mathematics
Performance Task #1 — Individual Activity
A cylinder with radius r and height 2r+ 4 contains acube with an edge length r√2,as shown.
What fraction of the cylinder's volume  is taken up by the cube? Write your answer in simplified
form.

Given:
cylinder with radius r and height 2r + 4
cube with edge length r√(2)
Solution
Step 1: Solve for Volume of cylinder
V = πr²h
r=r
h = 2r+4
V = π(r)²(2r+4)
V = πr²(2r+4)
V = 2πr³ + 4πr²
Step 2: Solve for Volume of cube
V = s³
s = r√2
V = (r√2)³
V = 2r³√2
Step 3: Solve for fraction part
Fraction = Volume of cube/Volume of cylinder
= (2r³√2)/2πr³ + 4πr²
let r = 1
= (2r³√2)/2πr³ + 4πr²
= (2(1)³√2)/2π(1)³+4π(1)²
= (2√2)/(2π+4π)
= 0.1500
= 15/100
= 3/20
Answer: 3/20

Performance Task #2 — Group Activity

In a bike race, a rider covers a 5-mi flat stretch of road at a speed of s mi/h. She then doubles
her speed down a hill 1 mi long. Finally, she reduces her downhill speed by 12mi/h as she
rides the last 3 mi of the race. What function gives the time t it takes the rider to finish the race
in terms of s?

Given : let s be the speed = s

 let t be the time = t
 5-mi-flat stretch road at a speed of s mi/h = 5/s
 she then doubles her speed down a hill 1 mi long = 1/2s
             she reduces her downhill speed by 12mi/h as she rides the last 3 mi of the race. 3/(2s-12)

Required : a function that gives time t it takes the rider to finish the race in terms of s

Equation : Using the formula for speed s = d/t, we can find a the t in this equation by
                  simply dividing d both side. Hence, we will get t = d/s. We will use this formula to
                  create our function.

t(s) = (5/s) + (1/2s) + (3/(2s-12))

For example :
t(s) = (5/s) + (1/2s) + (3/(2s-12))
t(4) = (5/4) + (1/2⋅4) + (3/(2⋅4-12))
t(4) = (5/4) + (1/8) + (3/-4)

t(4) = 5/8

t(4) = 0.625 hours

Performance Task #3 — Group Activiry

A restaurant has 45 tables. Each table seats 4 people. The manager has 4 employees to prepare
the tables. The chart shows how fast each employee works. Use this information to answer the
following questions.

time to fold 4 napkins (min) time to set 4 places (min)

employee

Stacie 3 5
Jeff 4 3

Tiffany 5 2

Nick 3.5 4

A. . In order to get the tables ready in the least amount of time, which two employees should
the manager ask to fold napkins? Which two employees should  the manager ask to set
the tables?

            Fastest Employee for folding 4 napkins : Stacie (3 mins) and Nick (3.5 mins)
            Fastest Employee for setting 4 places : Tiffany (2 mins) and Jeff (3 mins)

B.  If everyone starts working at the same time, how quickly can the employees get the
tables ready for dinner? The first pair of employees to finish their job should help the
other pair to finish the tables. Explain your answer.

Given : let x be the time spent for Stacie and Nick to fold all of the napkins
             let y be the time spent for Tiffany and Jeff to set all the places
             let z be the overall time spent for everyone
             Stacie = 1/3
             Nick = 1/3.5
             Tiffany = 1/2
             Jeff = 1/3

Required : everyone's spent time if they start working at the same time in the form of :
                  (x)(45) + (y)(45) = 1/z

Equation : Solve for x first. (Stacie + Nick = 1/x)

                  Solve for y. (Tiffany + Jeff = 1/y)
                  Solve for z. (1/x + 1/y = 1/z)

Solution : Solve for x first. (Stacie + Nick = 1/x)

                 (1/3) + (1/3.5) = 1/x
                (7/21) + (6/21) = 1/x
                               13/21 = 1/x         ~ cross multiply
                                  13x = 21          ~ divide both side by 13
                                      x = 21/13     ~ multiply by 45 because the value of x only
corresponds
                                                              to one table and we need the overall time for 45 tables
                      (21/13)(45) = 945/13 or 72 and 9/13 minutes

                    Then solve for y. (Tiffany + Jeff = 1/y)

                     (1/2) + (1/3) = 1/y
                     (3/6) + (2/6) = 1/y
                                   5/6 = 1/y         ~ cross multiply
                                    5y = 6            ~ divide both side by 5
                                     y = 6/5          ~ multiply by 45 because the value of y only
corresponds
                                                              to one table and we need the overall time for 45 tables
                          (6/5)(45) = 54 minutes

                     Solve for z. 1/(945/13) + 1/54 = 1/z

             1/(945/13) + 1/54 = 1/z
                            61/1890 = 1/z        ~ cross multiply
                                    61z = 1890    ~ divide both side by 61
                                        z = 1890/61 or 30 min and 60/61 minutes

Answer : It will take about 30.98 minutes or almost 31 minutes for the employees to
accomplish their tasks if they all work out together.
