Fernando Amorsolo was born May 30, 1892, in the


Paco district of Manila. At 13 he was
apprenticed to the noted Philippine artist
Fabian de la Rosa, his mother's first cousin. In
1909 Amorsolo enrolled at the Liceo de Manila
and then attended the fine-arts school at the
University of the Philippines, graduating in

Vicente Silva Manansala (January 22, 1910 –


August 22, 1981) was a Filipino cubist painter
and illustrator. One of the first
Abstractionists on the Philippine art scene
Vicente Manansala is also credited with
bridging the gap between the city and the
suburbs, between the rural and cosmopolitan
ways of life.

Madonna of the Slums is a portrayal


of the urban poor that takes place in
the post-war slums. It reflects the
period's sense of fear and
uncertainty.

The upper blue stripe stands for peace, truth, and


justice; the lower red stripe represents patriotism
and bravery; and the white triangle represents
Filipino yearning for equality. From my
perspective, the creation of the flag was an
extremely significant work of art.
