Since the focus of this lesson is comparing and contrasting multimodal texts,
firstly, you need to recognize and identify linking expressions or signal words that
would help you do all the tasks. The teacher will discuss linking expressions or signal
words used to compare and contrast things or ideas.

Contrast Words
What would happen if there are no transitions signifying contrast? There would be no
way for us to articulate our polar, different and conflicting ideas and thereby debates
could not exist. Hence, contrast words are very important in composition writing.

1. People who play basketball are generally quite tall. In contrast, gymnasts are
typically short.
2. Both vegans and vegetarians avoid the consumption of meat. However, the
former also avoids all animal products in all instances.
3. Feminism is on the rise now but so is resistance to it.
4. I do like bananas but I dislike apples.
5. I prefer sweet food instead of sour and salty one.
In addition, it is also necessary to understand the different multimodal texts that you
will be comparing and contrasting later for the tasks.

D. Application

Activity: After the discussion, the teacher will group the class into 4 group thru
entering separate google suite. The teacher will once again give the picture of the
WATTPAD and Pocketbook and using the chart below each group must create at least
3 to 5 sentences that use to compare and contrast the two pictures. Each group will
select 1 leader to present their output.

Activity: What’s on the Table?


Directions: Complete the table below by categorizing the sentence if it is comparing or
contrasting. Write the signal words used on each sentence.

1. Both African and Asian literatures are reflection of suffering and discrimination
against tyrants and colonizers.

2. Slavery is reflected in African literature while war of dynasties is reflected in


Asian Literature.

3. Similarly, African and Asian literatures show the philosophy of life which are
deeply and predominantly thoughtful and sweet.

4. African literature shows prejudices of colonizers to the black people. In


contrary, Asian literature shows prejudices manifested by some emperors and kings.
