CONCEPT NOTE
Dictionaries and Thesaurus are reference books for words. The best way to understand
the difference between dictionary and thesaurus is clarifying the terms individually.
What is a Thesaurus?
A thesaurus contains a list of words in alphabetical order, that are similar in meaning
(synonyms) and opposite meaning (antonyms)
ACTIVITY 1
Synonyms: Antonyms:
cold - freezing young - old
large – big day - night
trash - garbage near - far
shout - yell dry - wet
speak - talk long - short
Directions: Replace the underlined word with a synonym inside the parenthesis. Be
guided by context clues and the use of a thesaurus. Circle the correct answer.
