1. Proposed Research Title

Impact of Vocabulary Knowledge in Science in Choosing General Science as Major among

Freshman Students at Isabela State University- Ilagan

2. Narrate results of stakeholders’ interviews to support existence of the problems for

research.

Students face difficulties in understanding novel words and concept about science they're not aware
of new terms and concept, having difficulties to understand and communicate using appropriate
terminologies.

Teachers are concerned about their students' lack of familiarity with scientific vocabulary because,
if they don't know the terms themselves, they describe them repeatedly for them, giving them a
solid foundation in the language of science. The language of science helps them to have a
connection with new information and it helps them to have a better understanding of scientific
concepts.

3. Briefly cite authors and their statements to support your problem which are your
compelling reasons for the study.

The following studies show the impact of vocabulary knowledge in science for learners:

Fisher and Frey (2014) stated that Vocabulary plays a crucial role in science because it is at the
heart of science learning and knowledge building. To discuss and build knowledge, students need
to have access to the vocabulary of science

Kweon and Kim (2008) found that nouns are learned more easily than verbs or adjectives in the
incidental learning of words that occurs through extensive reading of text. In a study of young
children’s learning of science vocabulary

Manalansan et. al., (2020) stated that choosing a career path is difficult for students, especially in
their transition from senior high school to college. Students struggle to select the most viable
program that suits their interests, skills, and passion. Hence, most students end up shifting among
courses and, at worst, dropping out of their program.

McCulloch, and Starr (2020) also discuss the need for science educators to focus on students
developing conceptual meaning first instead of pre-teaching vocabulary

(Cassels & Johnstone, 1985; Johnstone, 1991) has shown that students consistently experience
difficulty in recognizing the correct scientific usage of words that have distinct everyday and
scientific meanings (e.g., random). The present study extends the work of Johnstone and colleagues
by identifying a scale for measuring everyday and scientific meanings of words, one that considers
the semantic relatedness of everyday and specialized scientific meanings.

4. Discuss how the problem can be solved.

This study is a descriptive research because it determine the impact of vocabulary knowledge of
student in choosing General science as their specialization it includes instruction, including using
semantic mapping of unit vocabulary words, biological morphology, and textbook reading strategy
lessons increased student comprehension in freshman students.

The researchers use a questionnaire to gather data to determine/know the impact of vocabulary
knowledge of student in choosing General science as their specialization
