CHAPTER I

I. INTRODUCTION.

Does anyone still remember a world without social media?

In this generation, people live in a time and age where information is just a

button press away. They are swayed by information all around them. The

millennials want to know, read, understand and speak our minds about it. That is

where social media comes into play. Social media is one of the biggest elements

that people live with and cannot ignore it.

SOCIAL MEDIA is an online platform which people use to build social

networks or social relations with other people who share similar personal or

career interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections.

One of the most user of social medias are students. Students used it as

an educational tool. It helps them to be well-informed and gain more knowledge

through searching on internet. Through social networking sites, the students can

establish contact with entrepreneurs, corporate people, professionals, and

experts where they can gain valuable information from them.

Although, humans cannot ignore the fact that social media are truly a

helpful in society, it is some kind of burdensome or a bit distraction especially to

the youth that is currently studying. According to statistics, average number of

hours a teenager spends online is 72 hours per week. This is very high

considering that they have to give time to study, physical activities and other

beneficial activities such as reading. It leaves very less time for other things and
hence, there are serious issues that arise out of this like lack of attention span,

minimum focus, anxiety and complex issues. They now have more virtual friends

than real ones and are losing human to human connection day by day. It is very

alarming especially to students to take social media as addiction as like Alexis

Ohanian says “It takes discipline not to let social media steal your time”.
