Controlled Practice
Here you will find a set of ideas on how to extend and vary
controlled practice (CP) within English classes and diversify the
ways of checking the answers. The suggested activities will ensure
that SS repeat the target structures several times and add more
context to them if necessary.

Checking

1. After the SS have completed the task, show them the list of
correct answers on the screen and tell them to check their answers
against the keys individually and correct them if necessary.

After that, ask SS how many corrections they’ve made. Ask them to
predict which sentence was most difficult for most of the SS in the
group. Then have them prove it right or wrong - tell them to read
the correct versions of the sentences they made mistakes in and
see which sentence gets repeated most often.

2. After the SS have done the exercises, get them to work in pairs.
Give them cards with answers to half of their sentences. Firstly,
individually, have them check the sentences against the keys they
have received. Then, in turns, get SS to check each other: 1 S reads
a sentence they don’t have a key to, the other S says whether it’s
correct or not and proves why this answer is correct.

3. Tell the SS to check the answers in pairs BEFORE receiving them.

Then, tell them each of them has a particular budget (say, $100).
Have the SS bet a particular sum of money on the answer they
think is correct, then reveal it. Repeat the procedure for all the
sentences. In the end, ask the SS who has won and why.

4. After SS have completed the task, tell them to rank their


answers: 10 - absolutely sure it’s right, 0 - you have no idea why
you’ve chosen this answer.

Check first those answers marked with 10, 9, 8 and then move on

to those which SS are not sure about and ask them why they have
their doubts.

5. In advance, record yourself reading the correct answers out loud.

In the class, after the SS have done the CP exercise, send them
your recording on the Telegram/Whatsapp and have them check
their answers against your recording. (In an online class, tell the SS
to mute themselves while they are listening and checking).

6. Prepare a set of metaphorical cards (ideally - twice the number


of the SS). Before checking the answers, have 1 student choose a
sentence from the exercise they’ve done and a card they associate
the sentence with. Tell the S to show the card to the others. The
rest of the SS guess the sentence the S has in mind. If there are any
mistakes, correct them on the spot.

Alternatively: Tell the S to show the card to the others and say
what the association between the card and the sentence is about
(the action, the emotion, the place etc.)

7. After CP and before checking the answers, have 1 student pick


one of the sentences from the exercise and mime/draw it. Have the
other SS guess the sentence and say it out loud. If there are any
mistakes, ask SS to prove which form is correct.

8. In advance, write the answers in advance on sticky notes and


stick them to different places in the classroom. After the CP, tell the
SS they have 3 min to find all the keys on the sticky notes around.
SS cannot move the sticky notes!

9. Stick 2 cards with the keys on the opposite wall. Divide SS into

2 teams. In each team, a member should run to the wall and in 3-4
seconds memorise as many answers as possible and convey them
to their team members. The team that has checked the exercise the
quickest, wins (BUT only after the T has checked their
corrections!).

10. Depending on the topic of the exercise and the content of the
sentences, before checking, ask SS to choose a sentence and turn
it into a metaphor, e.g. “If this sentence was a colour / melody / film
genre / weather / plant / animal / a dish etc., it would be…”. Have the
rest of the SS guess the sentence. Introduce corrections if
necessary.
