Assignment 34 Total: 30 marks

1. 𝑃, 𝑄 and 𝑅 are three buildings. A car began its journey at 𝑃, drove to 𝑄, then to 𝑅

and returned to 𝑃.

The bearing of 𝑄 from 𝑃 is 058° and 𝑅 is due east of 𝑄.

N
𝑃𝑄 = 114 km and 𝑄𝑅 = 70 km. P

Q R
70km

(i) Draw a clearly labelled diagram to represent the above information. Show

on the diagram

(a) the north/south direction

(b) the bearing 058°

(c) the distances 114 km and 70 km. [3]

(ii) Calculate

(a) the measure of angle 𝑃𝑄𝑅

SOLUTION: The bearing of Q from P and the angle P are alternate

angles; therefore, they are equal. So, angle Q is also 58 degrees
[1]

(b) the distance 𝑃𝑅

SOLUTION:

By using the Law of cosines:

a2 = b2 + c2 – 2bc cos A

a2 = 702 + 1142 – 2(70) (114) cos 58

= 9438.49

= 97.15km

[3]

(c) the bearing of 𝑃 from 𝑅

SOLUTION:

p-

Answer = 61 degrees

2. Let 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶 be three towers. The bearing of B from A is 120° and angle 𝐴𝐵𝐶 is

68°. The distance from Tower 𝐴 to Tower B is 145 m and the distance from Tower

𝐵 to Tower 𝐶 is 240 m.

𝐴 120°

𝑥
68° 𝐵

(i) Determine the value of angle 𝑥.

SOLUTION:

Angles on a straight line add up to 180, so:

180-120

= 60 degrees

Angle 𝑥 is the same as the interior angle found, which is 60, since they are
alternating angles:

Therefore: 𝑥 = 60 deg.

[1]

(ii) Calculate the bearing of 𝐴 from 𝐵.

SOLUTION:

180+52+56=

=288 deg

[1]

(iii) Calculate the bearing of 𝐶 from 𝐵.

SOLUTION:

180 + 52

= 232 deg

[1]

(iv) Find, to the nearest metre, the distance 𝐴𝐶. [3]

3. The angle of depression of an aeroplane measured from a control tower, PQ, of

height 88.9 m is 48°. When the plane moves along the runway from point A to

point B and stops, the angle of depression becomes 25.2°. The distance from point

𝑃 to point A is given as 119.6 m.

(i) Complete the diagram below to represent this information. [2]

𝑄 𝐴 𝐵

(ii) Leaving your answers correct to ONE decimal place, calculate

(a) Determine the distance from the control tower to point 𝐴.

SOLUTION:

88.9
AB = tan41

= 102.2m⁡
[2]

(b) Calculate the distance moved by the plane from its initial position. [

SOLUTION:

b = √c2 - a2 =

√(119.6)2 - (88.9)2 =

√14304.16 - 7903.21

= √6400.95

= 80.0 m

4. The formula used to find the focal length of a lens is given by:

1 1 1
+ =
𝑢 𝑣 𝑓

(a) Given that 𝑢 = 2 and 𝑣 = 3, find the value of 𝑓.

SOLUTION:

By substituting the values 2 and 3 into the equation, we have:

1 1 1
+3 = 5
2
[1]

(b) Make 𝑢 the subject of the formula. [2]

5. Find the range of values of 𝑥 for which

[2]
SOLUTION:

2𝑥 − 2 ≥ -4 * 5

2𝑥 ≥ ⁡ −20 + 2

2𝑥 ≥ ⁡ −18

18
2𝑥 ≥ ⁡ −
2

𝑥 ≥ −9

6. Find the range of values of 𝑥 for which

𝑥 𝑥
1⁡−⁡ <⁡3⁡−⁡ [2]
4

SOLUTION:

Step 1: Simplify both sides

1 3
− 𝑥+⁡< ⁡ − 𝑥 + 3
4 4

3
Step 2: Add 4 to both sides

1 3 3 3
− 𝑥+1+ 𝑥 < − 𝑥+3+
4 4 4 4
1
That makes: 2 𝑥 + 1 < 3

Step 3: Subtract 1 from both sides

1
𝑥+1−1 < 3−1
2

1
𝑥<2
2

Step 4: Multiply both sides by 2

1
2 ∗ ( 𝑥) < 2(2)
2

𝑥<4
