QUESTION 1
(a) Determine the value of the following without the use of a calculator:
(1) sin 90˚ × tan 30° (3)
(2) cos 30˚ × tan 60˚ − 1 (3)
sec 60˚

(b) Prove that tan 90° is undefined without using a calculator. (1)

QUESTION 2
(a) Solve for 𝜃:
(1) 3 sin 𝜃 − 2 = 0 (2)
(2) tan(2𝜃 − 15˚) = 0,1 (3)
(3) cos3 𝜃 = 0,125 (2)

(b) In ∆ABC we are given:

(1) Determine the value of 𝑦. (2)

(2) sin 𝜃
Prove that tan 𝜃 = cos 𝜃 by using the sketch. (4)
(3) sin 𝜃
It is an identity that tan 𝜃 = cos 𝜃 for 𝜃 ≠ 90˚.

You discovered that the “tan” button on your calculator is broken. Use this identity
to come up with a strategy on how you would determine the value of:
tan 40° × cot 40°

QUESTION 4
A boat heads out from the harbour (point H) to an island (point I). The boat wants to go straight
ahead but gets pushed to the right at a 10˚ angle for
20 km (HB), before the captain could make the necessary adjustments at point B.

Here is a sketch of the scenario:

˚

(a) Determine the distance (BD) that the boat is off course from the desired direction. Round
your answer off to the nearest unit. (3)
(b) At this point, the captain decides to make the necessary adjustments to reach the island.
The island is 30 km from the harbour in the desired direction (HI).
Determine the angle 𝜃, at which the captain needs to travel to reach the island. (6)
