Las Virgenes Cristianas The Barque of Dante
Expuestas al Populacho

The Barque of Dante, also Dante and Virgil in Hell, is

the rst major painting by the French artist Eugène
Delacroix, and is a work signalling the shift in the
La Laguna Estigia
character of narrative painting, from Neo-Classicism
towards Romanticism.

Like the La barca de Aqueronte, the La Laguna Estigia

is based on Dante's Inferno, the painter pursuing the
theme leading towards a “darker” and “more somber
interpretation” of it. It portrays two scantily clothed
Christian female slaves being mocked by a group of
boorish Roman male onlookers.

Las Virgenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populacho or The Christian

Virgins Exposed to the Populace is a famous 1884 history
painting. Las Virgenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populacho is a "
landmark painting" depicting the persecution of Christians in
Ancient Rome.
