SLAB DETAILING

Slabs are categorized based on the followings;

 Types.
 Shapes
 Sizes.

Common types of slab

1. Solid slab
2. Flat slab
3. Ribbed slab
4. Waffle slab

Solid slab detailing

Simply supported slabs i.e All the edges are dis-continuous.

Lx reps the short span distance between supports.

Ly reps the long span distance between supports.

⁄ . This determines if the slab is spanning in one way or two ways

If ⁄ is greater than or equal to 2, then the slab should be spanned in one way.

If ⁄ is less than 2, then the slab should be spanned in Two-way directions.

Solid slab can either be singly reinforced or doubly reinforced. This depends on the outcome of
design.
Singly reinforced slab are the slabs that have their bottom face reinforced while doubly
reinforced slabs have their faces reinforced.

Examples

Singly reinforced slab:

Detailing a slab of 3500mm by 4000mm with Y12 at 150mm spacing across the short span and
Y12 at 200 mm across the longer span.

Solution

Plan
Pay attention to the following details;
Doubly reinforced slab:

Detailing a slab of 3500mm by 4000mm doubly reinforced with Y12 at 150mm spacing across
the short span and Y12 at 200 mm across the longer span.
ASSIGNMENT 1

Using a scale of 1:25, detail on an A3 paper a 200mm thick slab of 1800mm by 3800mm with
Y12 at 150mm spacing across the short span and Y12 at 250 mm across the longer span. Use a
cover of 25mm.
