SLABS

ONE WAY SLAB

• If long dimension /
short dimension is
bigger than 2 then
it is one way slab.
• Only 1 axis moment
exists where the
rebars should be
designed in one
direction
Two way slab
• In two way slab the
moment will be in both
directions.
• The rebars should be
designed in both directions

One way slab minimum thickness
Minimum Rebar/Steel Ratio
Area of Steel Table for
1m wide strip
Design Slabs
• A normal reinforced concrete design procedure for designing beam
can be used Mu=Mr. However no double reinforced design is allowed
REBAR SELECTION AND SETTING
1. Use the table to select rebars first for positive moment
2. Use half of the steel you find as straight bars and the others as bent-
up bars (Double the spacing for half of the steel)
3. At the location of supports the bentup steel will contribute to a
portion of negative moment. So subtract from the total negative
moment steel and design for the leftover steel demand.
4. Finilize your design by drawing
Bending

in Tension Zone
Bent Up / Cranked Steel
• The same bar is bent to
cover all + and –
moment regions.
• Provides economy
• Very efficient for slabs
