INTRODUCTION:
Setting goals it is provides you with both short and long- term incentives. It places a
strong emphasis on information acquisition and aids in time and resource management
so that you may get the most out of every day.
BODY:
GOALS
- Refers to the future valued outcomes that we plan and hope to achieve. (Locke
and Latham 2002).
SHORT TERM
- Within a week or span of several months.
- It is something you want to do in the near future. The near future can mean
today, this week, this months, or even this year.
LONG TERM
- Take years.
- It require time and planning. They are not something you can do this week or
even this year.
GOAL SETTING
- A process of stablishing clear and usable targets or objectives (Moeller, Thieler &
Wu).
- Helps trigger new behaviors, help guides your focus and help you sustain that
momentum in life. In the end, you can`t manage what you don’t measure and you
can`t improve upon something you don’t properly manage.
METACOGNITIVE
- Awareness of our cognitive process.
SELF-REGULATION
- Ability to manage our behavior and environment to improve learning.
IMPORTANCE OF GOALS
Ryan (1970) as cited by Locke and Latham (2002), premised that conscious
goals affect action, thus, a goal is the object or aim of an action. A college
student`s academic goal is to fulfill the course requirements and pass all
examinations to graduate on time for the length of the program he/she is taking.
Goals affect performance through four mechanisms (Locke, 2002).

√ First, goals serve a directive function; they direct attention and effort toward
goal relevant activities and away from goal- irrelevant activities.

√ Second, goals have an energizing function. High goals lead to great effort than
low goals.

√ Third, goals affect persistence. When participants are allowed to control time
they spend on a task, hard goals prolong effort (LaPorte & Nath,1975, as cited by
Locke & Latham, 2002) faced with a difficult goals, it is possible to work faster
and more intently for a short period or to work more slowly and less intensely for
a long period (Bryan & Locke,1967, as cited by Locke & Latham, 2002).

√ Fourth, goals affect action indirectly by leading to the arousal, discovery, and/or
use of task relevant knowledge and strategies, (Wood & Locke, 1990, as cited by
Locke & Latham, 2002).

SUMMARY/ CONCLUSION
Learning the importance of goal setting and the benefits of sticking to those goals
can be the defining factor determining whether we truly embrace the importance
of goal setting. The more willing we are to embrace this method, the more likely
we become to reach our personal definition of personal and professional
success.
