1.0 Potential Title

A Survey Study of Financial Situation and Academic Performance of Undergraduate Student


in School of Quantitative Sciences.

2.0 Introduction or Background

In the recent years, it’s obvious that COVID-19 pandemic had given huge negative impact to
the countries’ economic. Most of the people had faced difficulties in financial problem,
especially for people from low-income families. According to Falahati and Paim, financial
problem is referred to as inability to manage expenses. Based on York, Gibson & Rankin,
academic performance is said to be amorphous in nature, since it encompasses a wide range
of elements ranging from obtaining a professional degree to students’ moral development.
According to Tokunbo, Amos, and Oyediran, the students’ academic performance will be
affected by the family income.

3.0 Problem Statement

Students are playing an important role in the future of our countries. They could change the
country into a better place. According to Catherin Grant, tertiary education of younger adult
plays an important role in economic growth. Financially difficulties of students might give
negative impacts on their academic performance. To cope the family financial problem, there
are some cases of students work part time while studying. Some of the students were forced
to defer semester and went to work for living. Therefore, this study is focus on analyze the
correlation between financial situation and academic performance of students, identify the
factors and provide solutions to the relevant units.

4.0 Research Question
1. What is the relationship between financial situation and academic performance of
students?
2. What are the factors that cause the students’ financial difficulties?
3. How can we solve the students’ financial difficulties?

5.0 Research Objectives


1. To study the correlation between financial situation and academic performance of
students.
2. To identify the factors that cause the students’ financial difficulties.
3. To propose a solution to deal with students’ financial problem.

6.0 Research Scope

The scope of the research is limited to the undergraduate students in School of Quantitative
Sciences, Universiti Utara Malaysia. Hence, the research is more likely to proposed to the
pre-university student who are intending to study in SQS UUM. The time duration of the
research will be 6 months.
