Introduction

Games have already existed since ancient times and human have evolved the way and type of games
that are played. There are card games, board games, sports games, and now with the technology that
we acquire started the era of video games where everything is digitalised. Gaming also gain such a
huge following that there are many pursue it as their main way of earning a living by entering
tournament as such. Malaysia’s ministry of education has introduced a new way of evaluating
students through KBAT which require a good problem-solving skills and students are struggling in
coping with it. Gaming might be a source of other issues for students, but it might be a steppingstone
for them in improving their problem-solving skills. There are many games that could develop
problem-solving which it teaches us a better use of cognitive thinking. Strategy based video games
seem to make players have an idea that they have higher problem-solving skills in comparison to
player that are not playing strategy-based games. Logically, strategy-based video games would
require more cognition than a sport video game which could easily lead people into critical-thinking.
In the meantime, they are learning a high-level skill from playing games that challenge them
cognitively. Correlating the act of gaming with enhancing cognitive ability of a human being such as
problem-solving sounds odd to most and yet it is something that is possible. The view of people
towards gaming is understandable as its benefit usually overshadowed by worrying issues such as
game addiction, bad social life, and terrible time management. Despite that activities that is most
popular among students is gaming due to accessibility and technological advancement throughout the
years. Hence, the study of this topic is inevitable to seek the silver lining in this huge boom of
popularity of gaming among students in this recent time.

Objective

1. To study the benefits of gaming in developing problem solving skills toward students.
2. To analyze and describe method of developing problem-solving skills using games.
3. To evaluate the research product by conducting online survey for students.

Importance

1. Games could be considered in its ability and improved in near future to tailor with the
cognitive skillset it will be able enhance in students.
2. This study will lead to more studies that will be conducted in near future by many so the topic
of gaming would not be such a taboo to relate with education.
3. Problem-solving skill will help to build the students’ character and prove useful in their
respective careers.
4. The subject of this study is student which will hold the key to the future of our country.

Methodology

In this research, an observation will be conducted to a group of students for better


understanding of the learning process and mechanism of problem solving while playing
games. How do we gather the data? We will be using online survey as one of the approaches
that we will be using in this research. This research will also be referring to available
journals, articles and other published resources that are related with the term of “Gaming”
and “Problem-solving skills”.

Expected outcome

1. Public will know that gaming is not always a waste of time but will benefits the
student.
2. Student will have more motivation to learn problem solving because gaming is fun.
3. Student able to develop problem solving skills without using stressful method such as
workshop.
4. We expect that there will be more than 50% of the respondent will agree that playing
games can develop problem solving skills among the students.

Conclusion

The conclusion from this study is that games are not just a mere medium form of
entertainment as seen by the community in the past. Nowadays, games have many benefits
for students and can be seen as a medium that is very helpful in the development of their
critical as well as to stimulate the thinking of the youth so that they can build their own skills
to solve problems quickly and efficiently. These skills can be honed more prominently when
it involved the cooperation of the global community and their knowledge are used as best as
possible in their lives. Along with the evolving technological revolution in the gaming world,
it has indirectly become one of the benchmarks for the learning process of today's generation.
If seen in this modern age, students are more adept at adapting their learning process with
technology because they have become accustomed to learning those skills from the games
they always play. The emergence of students or a new generation that is literate in the field of
IT also opened new visions and perspectives of various parties to accept playing games as an
effective catalyst in cultivating problem-solving skills among students.
