Advantages and Disadvantages of Playing Computer Games

Computers have become indispensable for teenagers of this generation. From
searching for information to having fun, you can possibly do everything with the help of this
amazing machine. For the modern-day teenager, the amount of time they devote on
computers has constantly been on the rise. In fact, one of the most popular activities among
teenagers today is playing computer games.
Computer games are definitely entertaining as well as educational. The visual
presentation is attractive and interesting, which is why it is able to engage players for long
periods of time. Moreover, the games are challenging and some are even learning-oriented.
There are games that test a player’s knowledge on history, science and a wide variety of
subjects.
Another advantage of playing computer games is that it increases our focus and
attention. This is especially true when we play action games because we need to achieve
certain objectives within the game to progress to the next level.
Besides that, it also enhances multitasking skills. A player may be required to observe
the game, use the keys as well as be aware of various features on the screen such as energy
levels, oncoming adversaries or available time because all these are needed to win the game.
As computer games involve certain rules, a player has to think carefully before
making any moves. This helps to improve their memory and thought process because they
constantly have to keep these rules in mind. Furthermore, they have to make quick decisions
at certain points of the game.
Research has shown that computer games have the ability to improve academic skills
and enhance cognitive and creative skills. Therefore, several educational institutions today
have incorporated computer games as a teaching tool. This helps promote and encourage
learning among teenagers.
Finally, online games enable many players to engage in a particular game
simultaneously. As a result, players may feel that they are connected to people of similar
interest and are able to make new friends.
Although much has been said about the advantages of playing computer games,
undoubtedly it brings a lot of disadvantages too. One of the biggest concern is time wasting.
When teenagers are engrossed in a game, the desire to win will make them continue endlessly
and could stretch to the wee hours of the morning. They also tend to neglect their studies and
eventually get poor grades.
Furthermore, playing computer games excessively tend to make a teenager physically
inactive. This can cause them to be unfit and unhealthy and suffer numerous health problems.
Looking at the screen for long hours is definitely strenuous to the eyes. Sitting at a place for
hours playing continuously can cause back pain, headaches, dizziness and repetitive strain
injury.
Another concern is reduced social skills among young people. They tend to become
introverts and very often show little interest in interaction with their family or peers. They
rather spend their time alone in their room and interact with virtual characters. Finally, some
games are violent and this may cause teenagers to adopt a different set of values based on the
games. They may see violence as a solution for justice instead.
In conclusion, computer games have advantages to could benefit teenagers in many
ways. However, they have to be careful not to play computer games excessively. As with all
things, moderation is key.
