Prologue
This document contains all the information you need to operate and service the maquette. For more
information look at our website: Life@water.com. A paper version of this document should always
be kept with the device.
- Prologue:
Regulating the water level in the polders and canals is usually done by water pumping stations. To
simulate these water pumping stations we made a maquette. We have made a maquette based on
these water pumping stations. The maquette can simulate the process of these stations situated
between the canal and the polder. This document is made to clarify how to use this maquette
- Situation:
There are seven buttons built into this maquette. With these buttons you can simulate seven
different situations. With the use of the LEDs it will be simulated how the installation would respond.
In the text below there is a description of what the reaction of the installation would be. In the
legend below you can find extra information about the codes
1. The button gets pressed, this will simulate the water level in the polder to be 10 centimeters
above the wanted level. LED E2.1 will turn on.
2. LEDs M1.3, M2.3, M3.3 and M4.3 will turn on, this will simulate the pumps to start running
at full power.
3. After 5 seconds: LED E2.1 turns off, LED E2.3 turns on. The water level is at the wanted level.
4. LEDs M1.3, M2.3, M3.3 and M4.3 will turn off and the LEDs M1.1, M2.1 M3.1 and M4.1 will
turn on. The pumps will stop running.
- Button: Polder +5
1. The button gets pressed, this will simulate the situation of the water level in the polder
being at 5 centimeters above the wanted level. LED E2.2 turns on
2. LEDs M1.2, M2.2, M3.2 and M4.2 turn on, this will simulate the pumps running at half the
power.
3. After 5 seconds: LED E2.2 turns off, LED E2.4 turns on. The water level in the polder is at the
wanted level.
4. LEDs M1.2, M2.2 M3.2 and M4.2 turn off and LEDs M1.1, M2.1 M3.1 and M4.1 turn on. The
pumps will stop running.
1. The button gets pressed, this will simulate the situation of the water being at 5
centimeters below the wanted level. LED E2.4 turns on.
2. LEDs K1.2, K2.2, K3.2 and K4.2 turn on, this will simulate the valves to open for 50%.
3. After 5 seconds: LED E2.5 turns off, LED E2.3 turns on. The water in the polder is at the
wanted level.
4. LEDs K1.2, K2.2, K3.2 and 4.2 turn off and the LEDs K1.1, K2.1, K3.1 and K4.1 turn on. The
valves will close completely.
1. The button gets pressed, this will simulate the situation of the water being at 10
centimeters below the wanted level. LED E2.5 turns on.
2. LEDs K1.3, K2.3, K3.3 and K4.3 turn on, this will simulate the valves to open completely.
3. After 5 seconds: LED E2.5 turns off, LED E2.3 turns on. The water in the polder is at the
wanted level.
4. LEDs K1.3, K2.3, K3.3 and K4.3 turn off and the LEDs K1.1, K2.1, K3.1 and K4.1 turn on.
The valves will close completely.
- Button: Refresh
1. The button gets pressed, this will simulate the water in the polder to get refreshed.
2. LEDs K1.2, K2.2, K3.2 and K4.2 turn on, this will simulate the valves to open for 50%.
3. After 5 seconds: LEDs E2.1 turns on. The water in the polder is 10 centimeters above the
wanted level.
4. LEDs K1.2, K2.2, K3.2 and K4.2 turn off, LEDs K1.1, K2.1, K3.1 and K4.1 turn on. The
valves will close completely.
5. LEDs M1.2, M2.2, M3.2 and M4.2 turn on, this will simulate the pumps to run at half the
power.
6. After 5 seconds: LED E2.1 turns off, LED E2.3 turns on. The water in the polder is at the
wanted level.
7. LEDs M1.2, M2.2, M3.2 and M4.2 turn off, LEDs M1.1, M2.1 M3.1 and M4.1 turn on. The
pumps will stop running.
1. The button gets pressed, this will simulate the water in the canal to be too high.
2. LED E1.2 turns off, LED E1.1 turns on. The water level in the canal is too high.
3. LEDs K1.3, K2.3, K3.4 and K4.4 turn on. All the valves will open fully.
4. After 5 seconds: LED E1.1 turns off, LED E1.2 turns on. The water in the canal is at the
wanted level.
5. LEDs K1.3, K2.3, K3.4 and K4.4, LEDs K1.1, K2.1, K3.1 and K4.1 turn on. The valves will
close completely.
1. The button gets pressed, this happens when an unsafe situation occurs in one of the
pump stations. There will be an emergency stop present in all four water pumping
stations.
2. All LEDs turn off, except for M2.1 M3.1 and M4.1, and also K1.1, K2.1, K3.1 and K4.1. All
pumps will turn off immediately and all valves will be fully closed.
