Grammar 1:
Degree of Comparisons

• Function: to compare objects with


another objects using their adjectives.

• There are 3 degrees of comparisons:


Positive degree
Comparative degree
Superlative degree
Formula:
 Positive:
A + V + as … as + B
Example: Andrew is as smart as Santi.
 Comparative:
A + V + … er + than + B
A + V + more … + than + B
Example:
John speaks clearer than George.
Michael is more handsome than me.
 Superlative:
A + V + the … est.
A + V + the most …
Example:
Cheetah is the fastest animal on the earth.
Moussa found the most precious treasure in an old abandoned house.
Notes:

Grammar 2:
Intensifiers with Comparatives

• Intensifiers are words that make adjectives


and adverbs stronger.

Much / far / a lot: show big difference


A bit / a little: show small difference
Grammar 3:
Adverbs / Comparative Adverbs
• Adverbs are words that modify a verb / adjective / another adverb.

• Comparative adjectives describe similarities and differences


between two nouns (people, places, or objects)
• Comparative adverbs make comparisons between two verbs—that is,
they describe how, when, how often, or to what degree an action is
done.

• Example:
“John is faster than Tim.” (comparative adjective)
“John runs faster than Tim.” (comparative adverb)
“John is more careful than Tim in his work.” (comparative adjective)
“John works more carefully than Tim.” (comparative adverb)
Forming Comparative Adverbs

• One syllable + “-er”


Ex:
Fast – faster
Wide – wider

• More / less +“-ly” adverb


Ex:
Carefully – more / less carefully
Careless – more / less carelessly
