1. Present Simple
We use the present simple to talk about things in general. We use it to say that
something happens all the time or repeatedly, or that something is true in general:

Examples:

a) Nurses look after patients in hospitals.

b) I usually go away at weekends.

c) The earth goes round the sun.

d) The cafe opens at 7.30 in the morning.

We use do/does to make questions and negative sentences:

Questions negative

do l/we/you/they ? I/we/you/they do not (don’t)

does he/she/it do? He/she/it does not (doesn’t)

For example:

a) I come from Canada. Where do you come from?

b) I don't go away very often.

c)'What do you do?' ‘I work in a shop.

d)' He's always so lazy. He doesn't do anything to help.

Note: We use the present simple to say how often we do things:

a) I get up at 8 o'clock every morning.

b) How often do you go to the dentist?

c) Joana doesn't drink tea very often.

d) Robert usually goes away two or three times a year.

2.Past simple

Very often the past simple ends in -ed (regular verbs):

For example

a) I work in a travel agency now. Before that I worked in a department store.

b) We invited them to our party, but they decided not to come.

c) The police stopped me on my way home last night.

d) Laura passed her exam because she studied very hard.

In questions and negatives we use did/didn't + infinitive (enjoy/see/go etc.):

I Enjoyed
She Saw Did You Enjoy?
She See? I didn’t Enjoy
They Went She See
they Go?
They go

A : Did you go out last night?

B : Yes, I went to the cinema, but I didn't enjoy the film much.

‘When did MrThomas die?' ‘About ten years ago.

‘They didn't invite us to the party, so we didn't go.

‘Did you have time to do the shopping?' ’No, I didn't.'

In the following examples, do is the main verb in the sentence (did ... do / didn't do):
What did you do at the weekend? (not What did you at the weekend?) I didn't do
anything. (not I didn't anything)

The past of be (am/is/are) is was/were:

l/he/she/it was/wasn't

we/you/they were/weren't

was l/he/she/it?

were we/you/they?

Note that we do not use did in negatives and questions with was/were: I was angry
because they were late. Was the weather good when you were on holiday? They weren't
able to come because they were so busy. Did you go out last night or were you too
tired?

Past continuous
Yesterday Karen and Jim played tennis. They started at 10 o'clock and finished at 11.30.
So, at 10.30 they were playing tennis.

They were playing = they were in the middle of playing. They had not finished playing.
Was/were -ing is the past continuous:

I /he/she/ was Playing

We/you/they were Doing
Working etc.

I was doing something = I was in the middle of doing something at a certain time. The
action or situation had already started before this time, but had not finished:

 This time last year I was living in Brazil.

 What were you doing at 10 o'clock last night?
 I waved to Helen, but she wasn't looking.

Compare the past continuous (I was doing) and past simple (I did):

Past continuous (in the middle of action) Past simple (complete action)
 I walked home after the party
 I was walking home when I met last night. (= all the way,
Dan. (in the middle of walking completely)
home)  Kate watched television a lot
 Kate was watching TV when we when she was ill last year.
arrived.

We often use the past simple and the past continuous together to say that something
happened in the middle of something else:

 Mateus phoned while we were having dinner.

 It was raining when I got up.
 I saw you in the park yesterday. You were sitting on the grass and reading a
book.
 I hurt my back while I was working in the garden.

But we use the past simple to say that one thing happened after another:

I was walking along the road when I saw Daniel. So I stopped, and we had a chat.

Question tag
Study these examples;

You haven't seen Lisa today, have you?

It was a good film, wasn't it?

Yes , it was great.

Have you? and wasn't it? are question tags (= mini-questions that we often put on the
end of a sentence in spoken English). In question tags, we use an auxiliary verb
(have/was/will etc.). We use do/does/did for the present and past simple.

 ‘Karen plays the piano, doesn't she?' 'Well, yes, but not very well.
 'You didn't lock the door, did you?' ‘No, I forgot.'

Note: Normally we use a negative question tag after a positive sentence:

positive sentence + negative tag negative sentence + positive tag

Kate will be here soon, won't she? Kate won't be Late, will she?
There was a lot of traffic, wasn't there? They don't like us, do they?
Joe should pass the exam, shouldn't You haven't eaten yet, have you?
he?

Notice the meaning of yes and no in answer to a negative sentence:

You're not going out today, are you? Yes. (= Yes, I am going out) or

No. (= No, I am not going out)

The meaning of a question tag depends on how you say it. If your voice goes down, you
are not really asking a question; you are only inviting the Listener to agree with you.

Examples:

1. 'It's a nice day, isn't it?' 'Yes, beautiful.'

2. 'Paul doesn't look well today, does he?' ‘No, he looks very tired.'
3. ‘Lisa's very funny. She's got a great sense of humour, hasn't she?' ‘Yes, she has.'

March,2022 Teacher: Alberto Rafael,dr.

But if the voice goes up, it is a real question:

‘You haven't seen Lisa today, have you?' 'No, I haven't/

(= Have you by chance seen Lisa today?)

You can use a negative sentence + positive tag to ask for things or information, or to ask
somebody to do something. The voice goes up at the end of the tag in sentences like
these:

 'You haven't got a pen, have you?' 'Yes, here you are.'
 'You couldn't do me a favour, could you?' ‘It depends what it is.'
 'You don't know where Karen is, do you?' ‘Sorry, I have no idea.'

After Let's ... , the question tag is shall we:

 Let's go for a walk, shall we? (the voice goes up)

After Don't ... , the question tag is will you:

 Don't be Late, will you? (the voice goes down)

After I'm ... , the negative question tag is aren't I (= am I not):

 I'm right, aren't I?' ‘Yes, you are.'
