Project Thesis Guidelines for Supervisors/Students

Please ensure before sending thesis draft to the FYP Coordinator for approval the following
points are fully and correctly implemented:

This guide is intended to give you just the right idea of how a thesis should be according to
format. Following the guideline will ensure that no time is wasted in corrections and changes to
thesis over and over again.

Before outlining thesis chapter format, it should be noted that every chapter should start with an
“Introduction” section and end with a “Summary” of the chapter.

Chapter 1 Introduction

This chapter should emphasis the following points:

 Introduce the reader to Problem Area, its Background which lead to the selection of
thesis topic
 Intended modules which will be in the final product
 Break up of thesis which should state what the following chapters will discuss

Chapter 2 Literature Review/ Existing System/ System Overview

This chapter can be given the above three names depending on which type of project the
student is doing:
1. If thesis is a research based topic, then the name of this chapter should be
“Literature Review”.
 If thesis lies within this title the following should be written in thesis:
 A complete review of the literature with proper references
 This chapter should clear out what the students intends to do in view of
literature
 Chapter should highlight the differences in literature which lead to the
selection of the topic
 It should also be made clear that what outcomes should be expected at
the culmination of this research.
 Referenced material should not be older than 2003.
2. If thesis is intending on developing a system which is already either in manual format
or digital format implemented in an organization and the student wants to renew the
system to remove the flaws, then the chapter should be titled “Existing System”.
 If thesis lies within this title the following should be written in thesis:
 A thorough background of how the system previously worked
 Drawbacks in the previous system
 Intended solution for the problems
 Advantages of the Solution provided
 Referenced material should not be older than 2003.

3. If thesis is based on a topic which is new and the system does not exist in any format
in the real world, then the title of the project should be titled “System Overview”
 If thesis lies within this title the following should be written in thesis:
 A thorough review of the intended system
 What modules will be included in the system, with proper introduction and
usage of every module included in this section
 How will this achieve the overall aims and objectives should be discussed
 Referenced material should not be older than 2003.

Chapter 3 Methodology

Chapter 4 Requirement Engineering

Chapter 5 System Design

Chapter 6 Implementation and Testing

Chapter 7 Conclusion and Future Work

7.1 Introduction

Emphasize on the introduction of the concluding chapter. Throw some light into the whole
development of your project. The experience of learning and outcomes which you achieved in
this section
7.2 Conclusion

This section should emphasize on the technical issues which the student faced during the process
of development. How the problems were solved and the reality of the final product was achieved.
