Information Knowledge and Judgement

What is Information?
Information is a set of data that is
processed in a meaningful way
according to the given requirement.
It is processed, structured, or
presented in a given context to make
it meaningful and useful.
What is Knowledge?
Knowledge is a combination of
information, experience, and
insight that helps the individual or
the organization. It is linked to
doing and implies know-how and
understanding.
Judgement
The ability to make good
decisions about what should
be done.
Key Difference between Information and
Knowledge
Information is organized data about someone, or something
obtained from various sources such as television, internet etc. So,
information is facts or data being systematically presented in each
context. While knowledge refers to the awareness or comprehension
of a person’s education or experience gained on the subject. It refers
to the relevant and objective information gained through experience.
COMPUTERS AND COMMUNITY
We are all familiar with traditional ways to give back to our community,
including food drives, soup kitchens, or just generally volunteering money or time
to help a local cause. As times are changing, and technology becomes an increasing
presence in our lives, considering ways to include technology in our giving is
necessary. Many underprivileged students and communities do not have access to
technology, a heavily relied upon source of education, information, and
socialization that is becoming increasingly relevant in schools and professional
careers. Food, shelter, and basic life necessities come first, but including technology
in things like community drives is increasingly important. With this comes the
phenomenon of the "digital divide." This concept summarizes the disparities
between underprivileged and wealthier communities with access to technology,
and the social, economic, and other implications on these communities as a result.
COMPUTERS AND COMMUNITY
• Computers and Community Sociologists worry that the advent of the
internet has created a generation of people who
are Narrow and Unsocial

• A counter argument asks the question Are books

any different, which can also be seen as an
anti-social behavior?

THE DIGITAL DIVIDE
The digital divide refers to the gap between the
people who have access to a computer or a computer
connected to the internet and those who do not. It can
refer to individuals, social groups, and communities
worldwide.
The Economic Factor
The main reason individuals and communities don’t have access to a computer or an
up-to-date Internet service are economic. Example lack of money. Many developing
countries struggle to provide adequate telephone lines. PC hardware and software is
simply too expensive for many people in the developing world.
Economic factors affect the economy, including interest rates, tax rates, laws, policies,
wages, and governmental activities. These factors are not directly related to the
business but influence the investment value in the future.
Example:
• Labor costs have been and continue to be one of the largest and most
controversial economic factors in the world. Discussion and actions about it
has led countless companies to turn to other countries for labor, commonly
called outsourcing.
• Interest rates are integral to determining the costs and benefits of certain
ventures and business decision. Interest rates are highly regarded in
investment terms. When interest rates are higher, a response from many
investors is to turn to more secure vehicles for returns, such as bonds or
certificates of deposit (CDs). On the other hand, when rates go down, most
investors take risks because lower interest rates make it more affordable.
The Social Factor
There have been many social factors which have influenced the digital divide and its rapid
growth in modern society. These social factors include gender, age and race. they are huge
reason why the digital divide has grown as well as determining the access of
technology. Originally, the digital divide was attributed to Internet Access. Now, most people
have access to the Internet thanks to libraries, and Internet cafes etc.
Social factors, such as income, education, employment, community safety, and social
supports can significantly affect how well and how long we live. These factors affect our
ability to make healthy choices, afford medical care and housing, manage stress, and
more.
The Geographical Factor
Your availability of access to technology is largely dependant on the location of your
home as you may live in an area which has the availability of certain services like fibre
optic whereas others would not. Some locations are lucky enough to receive the best
services which is a great advantage to have whilst others may receive a poor service.
This is due to the location you are present in. Geographical factors which affect the
distribution of population are topography, water and climate.
THE FEAR OF TECHNOLOGY FACTOR
Many people do not use technology because they:

-Are not confident in their own ability to use computer skills

-Fear that other will laugh at their attempts, therefore it is easier not to try
-Think they will cause a computer problem as they experiment and therefore prefer not to
try
-Have heard or read news reports about computer fraud, Internet scams identity theft
THE LACK OF MOTIVATION FACTOR
Many people are not prepared to put in the time and effort to learn something new
-Some people link ICT with useless activities such as computer game playing, eyes damage, and
other more sinister themes
-Modern Operating Systems (Windows, MacOS) are much easier to use than they were 15 years
ago, however they still require a certain amount of effort to grasp.
THE CULTURAL FACTOR
Attitudes: Some groups of people feel that ICT for particular groups of people:
-The young
-The brainy
-Middle class
Cultural attitudes: Some communities place greater importance on:
-Oral culture
-Personal communication
-Kinship
-Strong family values
• Quality of service: Are the upload and download speeds sufficient for the
local needs of Internet users?

• Relevance: Does the connected community have the necessary skills and
technologies? Is there local interest and understanding of the relevance of
Internet access? Are there locally available mobile apps? Is there content in
the local language and relevant to the people in the community?

• Additional divides: Other areas that can create digital inequality

include security, interconnectivity, digital literacy, and access to
equipment.
IMPACT OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
HUMAN NEEDS

Positive Impact of Computer

• It helps you automate various tasks, that you cannot do manually.
• It helps you organize your data and information in a better way.
• It has much more computing and calculating power than an ordinary human.
• It may help your work to be a lot easier.
• It may be the storage of your important data and files.
• It may help you solve problems faster than an ordinary human being can do.
Negative Impact of Computer
• It can potentially destroy your social life and interactions with humans if you do not maintain
the balance.
• It may effect to the destruction of your eye sight due to radiation.
• It may cause pimples and wrinkles.
• It may damage your studies and life.
• Too much time in front of monitor may adverse effect your eye sight and can also make you
fat.
• It could cause violation of privacy, impact on labor force, health risks, impact on environment,
distraction from work, and possible anti-social influences.
