WIMAX TECHNOLOGY

ABSTRACT

The improvement in broadband and mobile communication technology provides good

quality of service in voice and multimedia applications with highspeed data connectivity, robust
service and mobility. WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is based on
wireless MAN technology. Optical fibres played a dominant role for its higher bit rates and
faster transmission. But the installation of cables caused a greater difficulty and thus lead to
wireless access. No doubt introduction to Wi-Fi wireless networks has proved a revolutionary
solution to "last mile" problem. It provides broadband and IP connectivity on "last mile" scenario.
It offers both line-of- sight and non-line-of sight communication.

WiMAX provides a flexible means for authenting subscriber stations and user station
to prevent unauthorised use. It refers to broadband wireless networks that are based on the
IEEE 802.16a standard , which ensures compatibility and interoperability between broadband
wireless access equipment. It covers area over 49km in range with the bandwidth comparable
to that of cables hands-up to 10mbps and higher. In this paper , a review on WiMAX technology
is carried out. WiMAX protocol including physical and medium acces control(MAC) layer with
key features is also summerized.
