PART 2. EXTEND
1. Structural fire protection is also called passive protection due to its passive characteristics. The purposes
of structural fire protection are to slow down the spread of fire on board and give people the time to escape
or, at the worst situation, reach the life rafts or wait for the rescue vessels.
Fire protection systems on board a ship can be divided into two categories: Structural fire protection and
firefighting. Structural fire protection systems are designed to slow down the spread of fire on board, while
firefighting systems are used to put out the flames.

2. Fire detection and fire extinction are active protection. Their purposes are very clear: to detect a fire and
extinguish it. In your opinion, what are the basic principles of fire protection on board ships? Explain.
Fire detection and fire extinction are active protection. Their purposes are very clear: to detect a fire and
extinguish it. SOLAS 74 gives 8 basic principles of fire protection on board ships in more details in Chapter II-
2, Regulation 2. These principles are as following:
1) division of ship into main vertical zones by thermal and structural boundaries;
2) separation of accommodation spaces from the remainder of the ship by thermal and structural
boundaries;
3) restricted use of combustible materials;
4) detection of any fire in the zone of origin;
5) containment and extinction of any fire in the space of origin;
6) protection of means of escape or access for firefighting;
7) ready availability of fire-extinguishing appliances;
8) minimization of possibility of ignition of flammable cargo vapour. No. 1), 2), 3) and 6) are actually the
principles of structural fire protection, 4) and 5) refer to fire detection and extinction.

3. The Maritime Safety Committee at its fiftieth session noted that regulation II-2/20.2 of the 1974 SOLAS
Convention as amended requires a duplicate set of fire control plans or a booklet containing such plans to
be permanently stored in a prominently marked weathertight enclosure outside the deckhouse. In your
opinion, would it be advantageous for both the shoreside brigades and ship’s crew? Explain.
The Maritime Safety Committee at its fiftieth session noted that regulation II-2/20.2 of the 1974 SOLAS
Convention as amended requires a duplicate set of fire control plans or a booklet containing such. These
plans are to be kept in the fire control station on the navigate bridge and they are to provide information on
the location of firefighting equipment, fire boundaries and the means of fire communication. The
Committee emphasized that the purpose of these plans is to assist the officers in charge of firefighting

during an emergency and that they should therefore be clear and simple. The Committee therefore invited
Member Governments to bring the regulation into force at an early date and to inform the Organization of
the action taken.
