PAST TENSES REVISION

PAST PERFECT + BY THE TIME (PANA CE) + PAST SIMPLE

She had finished the project by the time her manager asked her to present it.

PAST PERFECT + BEFORE + PAST SIMPLE

She had finished the project before her manager asked her to present it.

PAST SIMPLE + AFTER + PAST PERFECT

Her manager asked her to present the project after she had finished it.

1. By the time we got – past simple (get) to the theatre, the play had already started - past
perfect simple (already, start).

Got – past simple – always follows by the time

Had already started – past perfect simple – past perfect aways precedes by the time; already is always
used with past tenses.

2. When Ginny saw (see) me yesterday, I was crossing (cross) the street.

Was crossing – action in development, I was moving, when something happened – Ginny saw me

3. My dad had been painting (paint) the living room for two hours before my brother came (come)
to help him.

Past perfect + before + past simple

Had been painting – an action in progress before a past action

4. My sister had never been (never, be) to the circus before last week.
Had never been – never – always used with perfect simple; before last week – states that the
action happened before a past moment
5. The alarm clock didn’t ring (not ring) yesterday morning and I was (be) late for work.

Didn’t work, didn’t come, didn’t play, didn’t sing – DIDN’T + V – not – DIDN’T + V-ED/V3 (TWO PASTS)
