Economic Development During and After World War II

1. In your previous history subjects, what were the faces or marks of the World
War II?

 Second World War One of History’s ‘Most Epic Struggles for Freedom
and Liberation’. The 40,000,000–50,000,000 deaths incurred in World
War II make it the bloodiest conflict, as well as the largest war, in
history. Noting that the costs of the War were beyond calculation and
beyond comprehension. Some 40 million civilians had died and 20
million soldiers — nearly half of those in the Soviet Union alone.
Those were years of unspeakable atrocities, of lost faith and lost
humanity. At the same time, those years had also seen extraordinary
bravery, as well.

2. Who or which nations do you think became the most powerful or otherwise,
the weakest during and after the World War II?

 The British Empire was the most extensive empire in world history
and considered the foremost great power and the United States and
the Soniet Union grew in power before and during WW II. The
Liechtenstein was the weakest country in WW II because even they
fought on the battlefield they would probably have done more damage
to themselves than to anybody else. And Belarus suffered the worst
devastating of any country during the war in terms of a percentage of
its population.

3. Can you describe what you think was the way and quality of life during and
after world war II? What real-life experiences of your elders or grandparents
can you share pertaining to this?'

 What comes into my mind when talking about world war II is during
and after the world war II it is really a mess for all the people a lot of
establishment was destroyed, a lot of businesses was damage and a
lot of lives was gone. The people who was alive during and after the
world war II was in great trauma because every single day a lot of
people day and killing that time is everywhere. And, the economy of
the countries was in big outbreak that brings devastating outcome of
the world economy. After WW II the greatest fear was the recurrence
of the depression and it may result to the difficulties of societies that
would have in absorbing the massive manpower created by the
demobilization of the military.

4. What do you think were the actions of the local and world governments in
response to the effects of the most devastating historical event of the 20th
century?

 I think the action of Local and world governments response to the

effects of the most devastating historical events of 20th century is the
planner focus in reducing trade barriers and creating conditions
necessary for the flow of money and investment and the lack of
cooperation was associated with high tariffs and other imports
restrictions and protectionist to devalue their currencies to gain an
edge in global trade over the other countries. The latter alcoate
exchange rate wars among the nations involved more likely.

5. Do you still feel or sense the remnants of World War II? If yes, what are
these and how?

 Yes, because in some ways I can still sense the remnants of World War
II, like what happen to Spartly Islands, that island is considered as an
asset of the Philippines but the China react on it and claim that the
Island belongs to them because the Island is inside their boundary.
And it causes a large chaos of the countries to which countries should
does it really belong, the island is full of natural resources that fully
embodied a large source of financially that’s why a lot of countries
have an interest on the island because of its source that they can
benefit.

Activity 1: ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION

Market Integration

 Market Integration occurs when prices among different locations or

related goods follow similar patterns over a long period. Groups of
prices often move proportionally to each other and when this relation
is very clear among different markets it is said that the markets are
integrated.

World Trade Organization (WTO)

 The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international

organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its
heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of
the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The goal
is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers
conduct their business.

 The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization of 189

countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure
financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high
employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty
around the world. Created in 1945, the IMF is governed by and
accountable to the 189 countries that make up its near-global
membership. The IMF's primary purpose is to ensure the stability of
the international monetary system—the system of exchange rates and
international payments that enables countries (and their citizens) to
transact with each other. The Fund's mandate was updated in 2012 to
include all macroeconomic and financial sector issues that bear on
global stability.

Bretton Woods and the System

 The Bretton Woods Agreement and System created a collective

international currency exchange regime that lasted from the mid-
1940s to the early 1970s. The Bretton Woods System required a
currency peg to the U.S. dollar which was in turn pegged to the price
of gold

World Bank (WB)

 World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans

and grants to the governments of low and middle income countries for
pursuing capital projects.

General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)

 The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) is a legal

agreement between many countries, whose overall purpose was to
promote international trade by reducing or eliminating trade barriers
such as tariffs or quotas. Per its preamble, its purpose was the
"substantial reduction of tariffs and other trade barriers and the
elimination of preferences, on a reciprocal and mutually advantageous
basis."

Part I.

Scenario A: In your local town, one of the main sources of employment for three
generations has been agriculture. The government has recently decided to develop
the farmlands into real estate and exclusive subdivisions in order to attract foreign
investors to the country.

Your answer and justifications: It would be unfortunate if the paddy fields were
turned into buildings because the farmers would have nothing to plant, this is their
livelihood. Pity the agricultural farmers who only make a living. In this situation,
some will prosper and some will suffer and the government and the business owner
of the establishment will be prosperous and those who depend only on agriculture
will suffer.

Scenario B: The shoes that you really like are much cheaper via an online shop in
America.

Your answer and justifications: In this situation, I will really buy the shoes that I
like in a cheaper price via an online shop in America because we know that
America has a good quality in making their products and nowadays people are
practical in making our decisions in life to lessen expenses but let us not forget to
choose Philippine product “Tangkilikin natin ang sariling atin”. Even though we
buy product from other country let us put in our mind that we must support local
business here in the Philippines and buy more products here in the Philippines
than in other countries.

Scenario C: The Philippine Government is being pressured by the current

economic crisis to import rice from Taiwan and other nearby countries in the
region.

Your answer and justifications: Unusual because the Philippines is an

agricultural country endowed with plenty of natural resources, yet it is now the
world’s largest importer of rice but the government assures that there is enough
supply for every Filipino. This, of course, is in the form of imported rice as rice
production in the country is not enough to feed the entire population. Several
measures are being undertaken by the government to solve the alarming crisis.
However, real, thorough and long-lasting solutions must be the goal, not just the
government, but for all Filipinos to solve this crisis. The goal should not just be half
cup of rice; it should be rice on every Filipino table.

Scenario D: The company that your father works for has recently been taken over
by a transnational corporation with job opportunities in many parts of the world if
he is prepared to movie/ relocate.

Your answer and justifications: The right thing to do with this is to grab the
opportunity if my father is ready for relocation because we know that life is hard
and our daily expenses became higher as time goes by. Grabbing the opportunity

will help our family to overcome our financial problem and to sustain our daily
needs. The negative impact of this is we can't be with our dad, we can help him in
preparing for his work every day.

Scenario E: Your mother’s investment funds have been affected by the Global
Financial Crisis and she is worried that she won’t have enough money when she
retires.

Your answer and justifications: The Government should take a response for this
situation. My mother doesn’t have any fault regarding to this and her retirement
pay should not be moved due to this crisis. My mother has all the rights to get that
investment fund because she already invested a lot of time and tiredness in her
work.

PART II:

1. How do you analyze the “global” nature of multinational corporations?

 In my analyzation, the nature of multinational corporation is the

facilities and other assets in at least one country other than its home
country. Multinational corporations are those large firms which are
incorporated in one country but which own, control or manage
production and distribution facilities in several countries

2. Examine the role of regional coalitions in the global economic system.

 A collaborative network of healthcare organizations and their

respective public and private sector response partners that serve as a
multiagency coordinating group to assist with preparedness,
response, recovery, and mitigation activities related to healthcare
organization disaster operations.

3. What do you think would be the role of the nation-state with respect to the
changes in the world economic system?

 The role of the nation-state in globalization is a complex one in part

due to the varying definitions and shifting concepts of globalization.
While it has been defined in many ways, globalization is generally
recognized as the fading or complete disappearance of economic,
social, and cultural borders between nation-states. Some scholars
have theorized that nation-states, which are inherently divided by
physical and economic boundaries, will be less relevant in a globalized
world.
