Sources of lipids
There are three main types of lipids: triacylglycerols (triglycerides), phospholipids, and
sterols. The major source of lipids falls under these three types.
Triglycerides
Majority of the lipids, 95 percent, in the diet are triglycerides. Some common sources of this
type of lipid are fried foods, dairy products such as milk, cheese, and butter, and some meats.
Natural triacylglycerols are found in foods like avocados, buts, corn, and olives.
Phospholipids
This group makes up only about two percent of the lipids found in the diet. Animals and
plants are sources of this type of lipid.
Sterols
This group is the least common type of lipid. Cholesterol is a major source of sterols. The
body produces majority of its cholesterol while only a small amount is obtained through
foods.
