ARISTOTLE (c. 34 BCE- c.

322 BCE)
“We are not studying in order to know what virtue is, but to become
good, for otherwise there will be no profit in it.” So basing on this
saying, we can already say that Aristotle values goodness more than
anything else.

a brief introduction to aristotle

-Aristotle as we all know, is a towering figure in ancient Greek

philosophy, making contributions to logic, metaphysics, mathematics,
physics, biology, botany, ethics, politics, agriculture, medicine, dance,
and theater.
-He was a student in Plato's academy for 20 years.
-He was more empirically- minded than Plato or Socrates and is famous
for rejecting Plato’s theory of forms. and tungod ani, wala niya na
inherit ang position as the director of the academy pero he founded
his own school.
-His main focus in philosophy was his systematic concept of logic
through inference and deduction.
-His theory is the basis for syllogism, a logical argument where the
conclusion is inferred from two or more other premises.

Implications to Business Ethics: pero first, what is business ethics?

Business ethics refers to the standards for morally right and wrong
conduct in business. so si aristotle napud syay contribution diri na
aspect

-He first used the term "ethics" to name a field of study developed by
his
predecessors. prehdehsesor
-Ethics, according to Aristotle, is the attempt to offer a rational
response
to how humans should best live.
-Plato believed that there naay forms ang ethics, but Aristotle
disagreed that man was born with knowledge.
Aristotle believed that ethics is discovered in reason and thought and
acquired by practice and that knowledge comes
from experience. Kay si Aristotle as a philosopher, he believed that
knowledge could be obtained by interacting with objects.

-He emphasized the importance of developing excellence of character

(virtue arete) areteh as the way to achieve excellent activity ( energeia).
energeya

Examples of virtues or excellent character traits are honesty, courage,

loyalty, and integrity. These character
traits must be put into action. It is in being honest, courageous, loyal,
and with integrity
that one is considered virtuous virtuwos and has reached excellent
activity. so for aristotle, if you are doing all these, you reached
excellent activity daw.

and then he said, A person who

possesses excellent character therefore does the right thing at the right
time and in the
right way.

It is in energeia that Aristotle conceptualized the golden mean between

two
corresponding vices. He counsels moderation in all things and values.
Take for example
courage; courage is a virtue found between cowardliness (deficiency)
and rashness
(excess).

diri gi emphasize pud niya nga one does not display excellent
character when one is rash or when one is cowardly. meaning, wadaw
ga show ug excellent character ang isa ka person when he has too
little fear and excessive confidence or when he has too much fear kay
mao ni ang mga muserve as hindrance for such thing.

In addition, What can entrepreneurs learn from Aristotle?

Aristotle concludes that the role of the leader is to create the
environment in which all members of an organization can realize their
own potential. He says that the ethical role of the leader is not to
enhance his or her own power but to create the conditions under which
followers can achieve their potential. He did raise a set of ethical
questions that are directly relevant to corporate leaders who wish to
behave in ethical ways. again, diri, nag focus sya again morally no,
which is really relevant sa business ethics. the following questions
are:

1.Am I behaving in a virtuous way?

2.How would I want to be treated if I were a member of this
organization?
3.What form of social contract would allow all our members to develop
their full potential in order that they may each make their greatest
contribution to the good of the whole?
4.To what extent are there real opportunities for all employees to
develop their talents and their potential?
5.To what extent do all employees participate in decisions that affect
their work?
6.To what extent do all employees participate in the financial gain
resulting from their own ideas and efforts?
