PROJECT
IMPACT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN THE
FIELD OF TRANSPORTATION
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
We all know that transportation is inevitable in our life. Most of us uses
public transportation too. And by 2019, the transportation field was in
very development and economically stabled. But now, what’s the
condition? This year -2020, the whole world was disturbed by covid-19,
which was considered as a global pandemic. It fully disrupted the socio-
economic conditions.

Here, for this project I selected “transportation” sector

because, it has been one of the primary victims of covid-19. Everyone in
this sector has been affected economically by this pandemic. And it
may from autorickshaw to airlines. Due to lockdowns the people
hesitate to travel. Mainly to use public transportation systems. The
demand of people to travel became very less. The reason includes
social distancing too. People can’t travel as they are in the earlier years.
Covid-19 have a long-term effect on people’s travel behavior. When the
government imposed some instructions from dispensing tickets to
disinfecting seats and others decreased the demand for public
transportation. Even after the situation normalizes, the perception of
risk associated with crowded areas could lead to shift in preference
towards personal travel modes. It means to avoid crowded areas
people used their own vehicles. And people may also avoid shared
mobility modes like autorickshaws, vans etc..

It also adversely effected the lives of the workers in the

transportation field. Most of the drivers lost their jobs as the public
transportation was stagnant. Many bus owners hesitate to use their
bus, regarding to avoid risk taking. They cancelled all the trips. Railways
also have simultaneously cancelled passengers train and ramped up
parcel and other freight services for essential commodities. During
lockdown the people are restricted in many places. Only they are
permitted go for to buy essential commodities. For that everyone used
personal vehicles. It is too difficult to the public to use public
transportation facilities. Because they are unknown that who is infected
by covid-19.

DISSCUSSION
Drivers and other workers connected with transportation field
experienced big problems to face their daily lives. Their mental
condition was too poor. When I enquired in my village – Avitanallur,
most of the autorickshaw- drivers said that there’s also restrictions
from the local bodies. And it is based on the number of the vehicle. The
panchayat allotted certain days for the autorickshaws as number
ending in odd numbers on three days and vise versa. The government
also restricted the number persons that can be in be there in the
vehicle. So they it’s their responsibility to obey it. In bus they should
keep people in alternate seats. It was a big loss to them, they also need
diesel to run the vehicle. The price of the fuel also becomes a problem.
Most of them said that they are unable to buy things to their houses.
They survived through the public distribution systems. The kits given
during this pandemic situation was so helpful to them. Many of them
tried of other jobs too. And the fact is that there’s no jobs. This was the
same conditions of the bus drivers too. The lorry drivers has no jobs.
Tourist buses are in their shed, as the spots where closed. Some jeep
drivers gone for to run in the medical sections. All the workers are
worried of their health. But for their families, they need to work by
taking risks. When the situation of covid-19 in the village just normalize
the restrictions are taken-off. But when other cases are reported again
the restrictions are imposed. If they have any contact with a covid-19
reported case, they want to go for quarantine.
