Exercise
In at least 250 words, cite a case where maltreatment or physical
abuse has affected the physical, mental, psychological, and emotional
growth of a person.

Childhood maltreatment has been associated with an array of

psychological and somatic symptoms in adult life, as well as psychiatric
diagnoses including depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders , and
posttraumatic stress disorder. In addition, research has documented that
the combination of multiple types of maltreatment are associated with
increased health problems. Medical diagnoses associated with childhood
maltreatment are primarily syndromes characterized by pain and
disability in the absence of firm physical or laboratory abnormalities
including chronic pain syndromes, headaches , fibromyalgia , chronic
fatigue syndrome, and irritable bowel syndrome. Despite this strong
evidence, many recent reviews in the medical literature have failed to
acknowledge childhood maltreatment as an important predictor of adult
health problems. Furthermore, not all previous studies of childhood
physical abuse and adult health have controlled for family background
and early childhood adversity variables – potentially important
confounders. Childhood physical abuse is seldom an isolated event and
only when these other factors are accounted for can one confidently argue
about a health effect of childhood physical abuse above and beyond other
adversities in family environment. While these projects are important in
emphasizing the cumulative effect of abuse, it is also essential to
understand how specific types of abuse impact adult health net of other
childhood adversities and family background.

Lesson 2: Approaches to Human Development
Exercise

Observe your older siblings or parents. What development could you observe
now which they did not manifest before, in terms of the following:

Because of the physical changes that my parents

have undergone, I've noticed that they are not as
productive as they once were. They now have
Physical Manifestation of
weak knees, and I can tell they have a pre-
development
existing illness that they are attempting to
conceal. They develop a new body shape that is
vastly different from their previous one.

In terms of emotional development of all family

members, most of us are emotionally weak,
possibly as a result of past traumas. We've lost
Emotional Manifestation of
three members of our family: my brother, father,
development
and grandmother. So I realize that we grow up
emotionally weak because we don't have a good
enough approach to dealing with our problems.

In this case, most of them are well developed

because they are introverted and enjoy the
company of others. My parents' social life is not
Psycho-social manifestation particularly interesting to me, but I can say that it
of development fascinates me how they managed to bring
together so many people. They are excellent at
dealing with people, but not so much at dealing
with our problems.

Case Study

Michael's grandfather was teaching Michael how to drive a car. At first, Michael
was frustrated because his grandfather's reactions and driving were rather slow;
his grandfather explained that while he's not as fast as he used to be, he is more
careful in his driving in later life. When Michael followed his grandfather's
example and avoided hitting another car due to his cautious driving, he
appreciated his grandfather's slow, but careful driving.
Reflect on this case. What do you think does the loss of speed but gain of caution
try to imply? How you understand this based on the principles of lifespan
development.

 Michael's grandfather is simply speaking from personal experience.

The loss of speed but gain of caution implies that being cautious is far
more important than being faster or precision is better than speed. The
grandfather used to drive fast as well, and it's possible that he'd been
in a lot of life-or-death situations, which is why he became more
cautious later in life. He's just trying to teach his grandson that if he
wants to live as long as his grandfather, he should follow the advice
that was given to him. If we’re going to based it on the principles of
lifespan development, Michael’s grandfather is trying to emphasize
that the experiences that he have been through in life made him more
cautious and had change him for the better. His experiences can serve
as a lesson for his grandson to follow, but it is up to Michael whether
he will, because we all have our own consciousness that contributes to
our development.
