PRACTICE TASK/ASSESSMENT

I. Solve for the difficulty index of each test item.

Item No. 1 2 3 4 5
No. of correct responses 2 10 20 30 15
No. of students 50 30 30 30 40
Formula: Item difficulty (D) = no. of students with correct answer (n)/ total no. of
students (N)
Solution:
Item no. 1. D= n/N =2/50 = 0.04 or 4% (Difficult, Revise or Discard)
Item no. 2. D= n/N = 10/30 = 0.33 or 33% (Right Difficult, Retain)
Item no. 3. D= n/N =20/30 = 0.67 or 67% (Right Difficult, Retain)
Item no. 4. D= n/N =30/30 = 1 or 100% (Easy, Revise or Discard)
Item no. 5. D= n/N = 15/40 = 0.375 or 37.5% (Right Difficult, Retain)
a. Which item is the most difficult? Most easy?
Item number 1 has a difficulty index of 0.04 or 4 percent and item number 4 has
a range of 1 or 100 percent with a higher value showing the right response of a higher
proportion of examinations, this makes it simpler.
b. Which needs revision? Which should be discarded? Why?
Reversing and discarding items 1 and 4 is important since they are the most
challenging and simplest. It should be measured for its valuability as it allows to
examine and dismiss useful objects. It also helps to develop our experience in test
design and identifies the distinctive areas that need further focus or clarity in the subject
matter.
II. Solve for the discrimination of each test item.
Item No. 1 2 3 4 5

Formula: Discrimination Index (DI) = DU –DL (U-upper group; L- lower group)

Item no. 1.
Du = 12/25= 0. 48
DL=20/25 = 0.8
DI=Du-DL
DI= 0.48-0.8
DI= 0.32 or 32% (Can discriminate but item is questionable, Discard)
Item no. 2.
Du = 10/25 = 0.4
DL= 20/25 = 0.8
DI=Du-DL
DI= 0.4-0.8
DI= 0.4 or 50% (Can discriminate but item is questionable, Discard)
Item no. 3
Du = 20/25 = 0.8
DL= 10/25 = 0.4
DI=Du-DL
DI= 0.8 – 0.4
DI= 0.4 or 40% (Discriminating item, Retain)
Item no. 4
Du = 10/25 = 0.4
DL= 24/25 = 0.96
DI= Du-DL
DI= 0.4 – 0.96
DI= 0.56 or 56% (Can discriminate but item is questionable, Discard)
Item no. 5
Du = 20/25 = 0.8
DL= 5/25 = 0.2
DI=Du-DL

DI= 0.8 – 0.2
DI= 0.6 or 60% (Discriminating item, Retain)
Based on the computed discrimination indices, which are good test items? Not
good test items? Why?
Items number 3 and 5 are good test items because they were all positive and had the
highest proportion of items, while item 1,2,4 had a poor answer and the lowest
percentage and were thus not good test items.
