CHAPTER 1:
Demolition Work
Lecture By :

1.3 IDENTIFY DEMOLITION WORKS SITE

INVESTIGATION
Site observation and evaluation
• find out all of the peculiarities of the site. That’s why you measure and assess
before you take care of other tasks on your to-do list.
• Through site investigation and analysis, you ensure that the building is going to
be constructed on a suitable location for your project.
• Consider the size, orientation, and slope of the site.
• Check with local authorities for any building restrictions. They should also
provide information about old or existing water, gas and sewer lines that may
pass through the site.

WORK SITE INVESTIGATION

• With civil engineering projects, the site preparation can be demolition (both

above and below ground), soil clearing, soil testing, site plan designs, zoning

restrictions, environmental concern and coordinating how everything on the

project should run. Preparing your site properly to begin with means a much

safer, more productive working environment, and a total project that is up to the

standard.

1.3 IDENTIFY DEMOLITION WORKS SITE

INVESTIGATION
❑ Neighboring structures or buildings

❑ The previous use of the premises

❑ The means of access to the site

❑ The load carrying capacity of adjoining land including the removal of waste

❑ The presence of underground culverts

❑ The details of any traffic or pedestrian routes through the site

1.3 IDENTIFY DEMOLITION WORKS SITE

INVESTIGATION
❑ The need for possible temporary support structures for the building being
demolished and adjoining buildings
❑ The provision of welfare facilities
❑ Falls of materials and people
❑ The proximity of neighbors
❑ The location of any dangerous machinery

❑ The location of any public thoroughfares adjacent to the structure or building

1.3 IDENTIFY DEMOLITION WORKS SITE

INVESTIGATION
❑ The presence of asbestos, lead or other hazardous or radioactive substances

and any associated health risks

❑ The name of the planning supervisor.

❑ Environmental issues, such as dust, water pollution and noise

❑ Public safety including the provision of high fencing or hoardings

❑ Manual handling issues

Class Activity:

1.3 IDENTIFY DEMOLITION WORKS SITE

INVESTIGATION
Current general site environment, in readiness for the site investigation:
a) Access routes that are safe and convenient to use, and that have been
established to and from the site, around the site, and to and from places of
work;
b) Topographical features such as trees and water courses which can require
protection, or otherwise affect the planning of the work;

1.3 IDENTIFY DEMOLITION WORKS SITE

INVESTIGATION
c) Ground conditions, including the water table, the potential for flooding, ground
types, and the presence of sink holes, mineshafts and shallow workings;
d) Location and type of services, both above and below ground, as these can pose a
hazard or require protection, isolation or diversion, including details of
relevant contact;
e) extent of buried features such as basements, cellars, tanks and vaults with no
structures on top should be established, including proximity to the boundaries of
the site;

1.3 IDENTIFY DEMOLITION WORKS SITE

INVESTIGATION
f) Extent of above-ground structures, including those with basements, etc. and
including those at or near the boundaries of the site;
g) Presence of neighbors who require special consideration because their
premises or equipment can be sensitive to, for example, impact vibration, noise,
dust or electronic transmissions;
h) Presence of neighbors who can affect the contractor’s activities, for example, by
producing radio transmissions that may affect the use of electric detonators
when demolition by the use of explosives is being considered.

1.4 EVALUATION OF SITE CONSTRAINT

DEFINITION

Constraint, in project, is any restriction that defines a project's limitations;

the scope, for example, is the limit of what the project is expected to
accomplish. ... A project's scope involves the specific goals, deliverables and
tasks that define the boundaries of the project.

1.4 EVALUATION OF SITE CONSTRAINT

The constraints include:

a) Risk of adjacent facilities;

b) Proximity to public and populated areas;
c) Weather;
d) Logistic;
e) Services/Utilities
f) Authorities requirement
