Avicenna’s Speech Rev.

1. Assalamu’alaikum warohmatullahi wabarokatuh. Very good morning.

2. Distinguished Bapak Kepala Sekolah, Bapak and Ibu Guru, My lovely friends.

3. First of all, I hope you are all in good health. My name is Avicenna, from Class 8F.

4. On this beautiful day, it is my great honour to share my perspectives on verbal

bullying.

5. Verbal bullying is very dangerous, because it can cause many problems to victims.

6. Verbal bullying is one of four common types of bullying. The others are physical,
social and cyber bullyings.

7. Verbal bullying is a common issue in schools.

8. According to UNICEF, one in three children in the world experiences verbal

bullying.

9. Verbal bullying constitutes insults, teasing, making fun, saying derogatory words,
and other types of verbal abuses.

10. Unfortunately, people tend to underestimate verbal bullying.

11. Some say that, “as long as they don’t hit and kick me, that’s fine.”

12. But, my question is that, do words really never hurt us?

13. In fact, words could hurt victims more than physical actions.

14. Verbal bullying not only affects the victims during times of abuses, but also has long-
term consequences, impacting their whole life.

15. Verbal bullying can cause depression, low confidence, isolation, loneliness and
trauma.

16. More dangerously, victims of verbal bullying are at high risk of suicide.

17. If not properly addressed, verbal bullying can become a widespread phenomenon.

18. We must stop verbal bullying.

Bapak, Ibu Guru, friends,

19. To stop verbal bullying, we need everyone to be brave.

20. Not only teachers and governments, but also us, students, should be active to take
a stand.
21. In that context, I would suggest five actions to combat verbal bullying.

22. Firstly, Don’t participate. If you witness verbal bullying, you should avoid laughing
at the victim or praising the bully. Never take a side with the bully.

23. Secondly, tell the bully to stop.

24. Be brave. But, at the same time, you should control your emotion. Too strong
emotional reactions may lead to violence.

25. Thirdly, display good behaviors towards all people, including the bully and the
victim.

26. Promote positive friendship, such as respect, warmth and supportive attitudes.
The bully will have no chance to act, if we successfully build a positive environment
at school.

27. Fourthly, if verbal bullying is repeated and too much, report it to teachers and
parents. Don’t be afraid to tell them what’s happening.

28. Last but not least, carry out anti-bullying campaign among students, teachers and
parents.

29. In that regard, I suggest our school, SPENLI, to organize an “Anti-Bullying Week.”

30. The Anti-Bullying Week could aim to raise awareness of the danger of bullying and
to highlight ways of preventing it.

31. We can hold a series of events during the Anti-Bullying Week, such as seminar,
parade, arts performance, and competition, on combatting verbal bullying at our
school.

32. Moreover, we can create an anti-bullying club or an anti-bullying program under

the regulation and permission of Bapak Kepala Sekolah.

My respected teachers and beloved friends,

33. I would like to conclude by saying that we should stand together against verbal
bullying.

34. If they bully your friends, you could be the next victim.

35. We must not be silent. Be a hero. Stop bullying right now.

36. If not us, then who?

37. If not now, then when?

38. Our future depends on what we do today.

39. Thank you very much. Wassalamu’alaikum warohmatullahi wabarokatuh.
