Making the moves from being in school is not an easy task. Student need to make new friends at
the new environment. There also many new things student need to know and adapt with the university
life. And at the same time, now in pendemic covid-19, its very difficult for us to study in online media
platform. I need to sacrifice everything to make sure that I can catch up the lesson.

2.0 : GOAL SETTING

Figure 6: Goal Setting

What is goal?

What is the purpose of setting goals?

• Goals give you direction and keep you focused on where you want to end up.

What is goal setting?

• Goal setting is a process for thinking about your ideal future and for motivating yourself
to turn this vision of the future into reality.
• The process of goal setting will help you where you want to go in life.
• Properly set goals can be incredibly motivating and as you get into the habit of setting
and achieving goals, you will find yourself confidence build fast.

Specific Measurable

Figure 7: Characteristics of Goals

10
CHARACTERISTICS OF GOALS

• Specific
What is it that you want, from a particular goal? What you want to achieve? Everything must
be clearly specified. You have to be specific about the details. It is better to write them down and
stick it on the wall or door of refrigerator or any place where you can see it every time. If the goal
has a picture, put it up. These specific details program your sub-conscious mind, and your focus
shifts from the obstacles to the efforts that you can make to attain the goal.

• Measurable
You need to identify the quantifiable aspect of the goal. This way you will be able to measure
your progress, and actually remain motivated. For certain kinds of goals, you may not be able to
measure the results, especially for relationship goals or spiritual goals, but you can always record
the activities that you are doing that will take you towards the goal.

• Attainable
Setting goals that are unrealistic can actually have a negative effect rather than positive one.
It is good to stretch yourself a bit, so that you can grow more towards your potential, but it must
not be something that is impossible to be real.
Some people set goals, more to impress others. Many times people set unattainable goals so that
they can later blame their failure on the goal that was impossible to start with. So, set goals that
may be difficult and challenging but not impossible.

• Rewarding
The feeling that you get on achieving the goal is the reward that will keep you motivated in face
of challenges and obstacles and prevent you from quitting. These rewards could be of different
types based on the type of goals discussed in last page. It could be positions in your career,
material rewards based on your financial being well, physical, spiritual, or relationships oriented.

• Time-Bound
The final ingredient of SMART goal is that it must be time bound. It must not be too short, as
it will make the goal unattainable, and not be too much.
Time is one of the prices that you are paying for the goal, and you must give it time that the goal
is worth. Setting deadline will also insure you against procrastination and perfectionism.

11
The bigger goals in the life must be set first and an action plan prepared to achieve them.
These bigger goals are usually the long terms goals or life goals. The action plan of these long
term big goals will contain smaller medium term goals with their own individual action plans, which
in turn will contain even smaller goals till they boil down to monthly and daily goals.

• LONG-TERM AND SHORT-TERM GOALS

Long-term goals is the objective of the goals that you set end of the year for yourself for four
or five years from now or even for a lifetime.
Short-term goals we can set for an hour from now, end of day or semester.

5.0: MEMORY STRATEGY

WHAT IS MEMORY?

• Memory is the ability of someone to remember about a few things in their daily life like what
they are doing now or what they are doing before or to remain any information in their brain.

UNDERSTANDING MEMORY PROCESSS

What you typically think of as learning involves storing information in your memory so that it will
be available later when you need it.

There 3 types of memory

• Sensory memory
• short-term memory
• long-term memory

SENSORY MEMORY
Sensory memory is numerous incoming information from 5 sense will be stored in the sensory
memory for an instant. Sensory memory only can stored for 30 seconds up to 24 hours. If you
didn’t practice every day the information will be lost as well. That’s why it is important to PAYING
ATTENTION in class.

SHORT MEMORY

It is very limited storage. From the sensory memory, information will be released to Short
Term Memory. You only will be remember for short time. Information will be lost if you do not
make a review. Therefore, we as a student must realize that applying memory strategies is
important to strengthen the memory ability.

LONG MEMORY

This is unlimited storage. You can remember the information for a long time. But, if you don’t do
the practice or read it every day it also will be lost as well.

21
MEMORY STRATEGIES

Memory strategies, why it is important? Memory strategies can help us as a student to storing,
retrieving information (help to remember and recall) Kenneth High bee said “remembering hard
work, and memory techniques do not necessarily make it easy, they just make it more effective”.

How to improve your memory?

1. Massed practice (not good) vs space practice (good, recommended)

Massed practice: Means you memorize and studying all the materials at one time.

Space practice: Involve space time over some period of time.

2. Break while reading material. Example only read 2 chapters per day, not all chapters a day
before exam.

3. Repeat the information many times.

4. Elaboration strategies such as:

• Associations
• Acronyms
• Imagery – visualize the image of the information needed
• Organizational strategies- Organize the materials
• Comprehension monitoring strategies

Concentration-Focusing your attention on what you are doing

Here are some reason why cause of poor concentration.

• Lack of attention
• Lack of interest
• Distraction from others
• Physiological matters-tiredness, illness
• Lack of motivation
• Distraction from others
• Uncomfortable environment.

22
Strategies for improving concentration

• You can create a positive learning environment such as find a better location to study.
• You also can use motivational and organized strategies such as use time management
strategy like timetable or reminder.
• Match our learning style to the task.
• Deal with internal distraction.

Figure 14: SQ3R

• SURVEY – review the text to gain initial meaning from the tittle, subtitle or chapter
introduction.
• QUESTION – build a question while reading so that our mind will always looking for
answer.
• READ – read the paragraph for the information. And find the answer for the question that
have been formed.
• RECITE – answer the question that you formulated. Recite the answer on your own word
without looking at the text.
• REVIEW – look over your answer and the text. And ask what your text mostly about.
Recalling the question and try to answer the question again. Recheck it until you gain the
answer again.

23
6.0: TAKING LECTURE NOTES

WHY TAKE LECTURE NOTES?

• Helping us to pay attention in class.

• Helping us to study for quiz, test or final exam.

• Improving our knowledge and memory.

• Providing accurate information.

• Promoting active listeners.

• Organizing and processing data and information.

• Providing an opportunity for repetition of the material.

HOW TO TAKE LECTURE NOTES?

• Put date and label notes

• Spend some space to write note

• Use simple words and symbols
• Use an outline to show :
- Main ideas
- Supports
- Examples
• Use our own language by follow what we can more understand.

24
Strategies to improving listening skills:

• Read the topics before start the class.

• Do revision about the last class before.
• Face the lecture and maintain eye contact.
• Be attentive, but relaxed.
• Keep an open mind.
• Listen to the words and try to picture what the lecture is saying.
• Don't interrupt and don't impose your "solutions."

• Ask questions if do not understanding or can’t catch up the lesson
• Try to feel what the lecture is feeling.
• Give the lecture regular feedback.
• Pay attention in the class mentally.

7.0 : ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND PERFORMANCE

PLAGIARISM:

TYPE OF PLAGIARISM:

1) Use someone work as our work

2) Copying words or ideas without permission
3) Not put a quotation in the task
4) Give incorrect information about the quotation
5) Changing words but copy the others work without permission
6) Copy so many words or ideas.

How to Avoid Plagiarism:

• You can use the word or ideas with the permission but not copy all the words.
• Put the link of that web you take the information.
• Check for creative commons license

How to prevent plagiarism?

• Avoided through citing the original sources.

Planning:

-Consult the lecture

-Plan your paper
