PHILO 23 B 3
Why should I be moral?
Isn’t the spiritual goal of man to be in union with the divine, perfect, and all-powerful God?
I have been constantly reflecting on my past actions, and I ask myself this; how could I keep doing
the same mistakes again? To be moral, ethical, or good is the easiest task for man, insofar as man
is considered with his morality, however man, as an embodied spirit, can never be satisfied. Man,
despite his rationality, can be unjust. Man, accompanied with the knowledge of good, can still be
bad or evil. In a nutshell, man can still be detrimental in numerous ways possible. The question
arises, how can I prevent these from occurring? Why then, should I be moral, to my family, friends,
and community?
I. Happiness is an outcome of being moral.
Being moral to others comes with a price, that of which we call happiness, and I can attest to
this since I have experienced it. The state of being happy is closely intertwined with being moral,
the good deeds we have shown such as giving shelter to the homeless, advocating in a community
initiative, participating in a donation drive, and even the smallest act of kindness which are giving
food to the poor, showing love to our parents. These are moral acts, we ought to do genuinely for
us to attain happiness. Thus, happiness can also be gained through working passionately in our
dreams and receiving the progress we wished, for as long as we are not committing any injustice
while being happy, we are moral because justice is one of the primary principles of ethics.
II. As a student of philosophy, to avoid being clouded with ignorance, I should be moral.
Entering philosophy made me strengthen my will to serve the public, I have always wanted to
help the marginalize and see things in a different perspective, that of which many public officials
forget – fundamentally situating yourself in their situation. I deemed that ethics and your
performance in your preferred job or your current passion, should not be in isolation with each
other, rather both should be in near contact. In the early stages of life, for example, being moral
should be practiced as a form of cultivation to oneself. So that, in developing, I will be able to
ground my decisions with moral standards. I should be moral, from this time to future endeavors,
to attain self-respect and so, in continuing in life, I would not be ignorant to truth. Despite the
diversity of culture, religion, and beliefs I should be moral, to integrate healthy relationships with
people and institute respect. In general, I should be moral for it is integral and essential in my
humanness, my essence.
The first question mentioned above is based on a theological standpoint, which means I should
be moral because I care with my relationship with God. On a sociological standpoint, however, I
should be moral because a life without such is nearly impossible, it is difficult to live in constant
chaos.
