Intro to Laboratory Awareness
Objectives:

At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to:

 Identify the standard operating procedures when working inside the laboratory room; and
 Identify the different tools and equipment used in circuits and electronics and know their use.

Materials:

 Assorted tools and equipment

Basic Principles:

Laboratory safety is a number one priority when it comes in performing experiments and activities related to
recreating electric components. Without safety, there could be accidents waiting to occur just like breaking
equipment or injuring persons – even yourself. In this subject, engineers are more prone to injury and electric
shocks since they are going to dealing with electricity and improper misuse of equipment. In order to prevent
these mishaps, everyone must be able to know proper laboratory rules and procedures, be able to be guided
by a laboratory supervisor, and be able to set a mindful attitude in doing proper and safe action while inside the
laboratory room.

Hand tools and equipment can aid us in doing our job. These are found around household such as hammers,
pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. There are tools used in doing electrical circuits, like soldering iron,
oscilloscope, power supply, and other equipment. These tools help us to finish our job faster and easier,
because they require less energy to operate.

Procedures:

1. Laboratory Room

The instructor should discuss the following to the class:

 Rules for reporting damaged tools and equipment due to improper use
 Rules and regulation inside the laboratory
 Safety precautions that should be observed while working inside the laboratory
 Laboratory procedures in case of emergency and accident
 The guidelines in performing an experiment.

The following are the rules and regulations in using the laboratory room that are strictly implemented:
1. Cleanliness and orderliness are a must and should be maintained at all times.
2. Eating, drinking, and smoking are not allowed inside the laboratory.
3. Students without any laboratory schedule are strictly prohibited from staying inside the laboratory
without the facilitator’s approval for any valid reasons.
4. Students are not authorized to use any laboratory devices without the approval of the laboratory
personnel.
5. Avoid horse-playing or joking around inside the laboratory.
6. Always follow the operating procedures in using electronic devices.
7. SAFETY must always be observed.
