Learning Competency & Code: Distinguish mixtures from substances based on a set of properties
S7MT- Ie-f-4
Brief Discussion:
Mixture refers to the physical combination of two or more substances in which the identities of
the individual substances are retained.
Heterogeneous mixture is a mixture of two or more chemical substances (elements or
compounds), where the different components can be visually dis- tinguished and easily separated
by physical means.
Homogeneous mixture is a mixture of two or more chemical substances (elements or
compounds), where the different components cannot be visually distinguished.
Pure substance is a form of matter that has constant chemical composition and characteristic
properties.
Element is a chemical substance that is made up of a particular kind of atom and hence cannot
be broken down or transformed by a chemical reaction into different element.
Compound is a chemical substance that is composed of a particular set of molecules or ions that
are chemically bonded. Two or more elements com- bined into one substance through a chemical
reaction, such as water, and form a chemical compound. All compounds are substances, but not
all sub- stances are compounds. Source (Learners Manual p.30, 32-33, p 51-52)
