SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

What is Sustainable Development?

➢ Sustainable development can be defined in a variety of ways, but at its root, it

refers to a method of development that seeks to balance many, often conflicting needs
against a recognition of our society's environmental, social, and economic constraints. In
short, it’s defined as a development that meets some current requirements because it
sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem
services on which the economy and society depend, while not jeopardizing future
generations' ability to meet their own."

What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

➢ Sustainable Development Goals can also be seen as a blueprint to achieve a
better and more sustainable future for all of us. And here, let us introduce to you the 17
SDG’s.

Goal 1: No Poverty.
➢ One of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development
Goals, introduced in 2015, asks for the abolition of all types of
poverty. Member countries have promised to "Leave No One
Behind,". They aspire to eliminate all forms of extreme poverty,
such as a lack of food, safe drinking water, and adequate
sanitation. Finding answers to new challenges posed by climate
change and conflict are all part of achieving this aim.

Goal 2: Zero Hunger

➢ Their official wording is: "End hunger, and they achieve it
by food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable
agriculture. This goal highlights the complex inter-linkages between
food security, nutrition, rural transformation and sustainable
agriculture.
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being
➢ Their official catchphrase is: "To ensure healthy lives and
promote well-being for all at all ages. SDG 3 cover and focus on
various aspects of healthy life and healthy lifestyle.

Goal 4: Quality Education

➢ SDG 4 aspires to provide high-quality, easily accessible
education as well as additional learning opportunities to children
and young people. The achievement of universal literacy and
numeracy is one of its goals. In the learning environment, this is a
critical component in acquiring knowledge and important skills.

Goal 5: Gender Equality

➢ It aims to eliminate harmful practices such as child, early,
and forced marriage, and female genital mutilation, and raise the
value of unpaid care and promote shared domestic
responsibilities. It also ensures full participation of women in
leadership and decision-making; and ensure universal access to
reproductive health and rights.

Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

➢ It targets include: Safe and affordable drinking water, end open
defecation and provide access to sanitation and hygiene for people, and
also to improve water quality, wastewater treatment and safe reuse,
increase water-use efficiency and ensure freshwater supplies,
implement IWRM to protect and restore water-related ecosystems.
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
➢ Its goal is to "ensure that everyone has access to
affordable, dependable, sustainable, and contemporary energy,"
as energy is a critical component of people's well-being, economic
development, and poverty alleviation.

Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

➢ This goal aims at ensuring the economic sector of every

country provides the necessary need for its citizen to have a good

industrialization, and encouraging innovation are all goals of
SDG 9.

Goal 10: Reduced Inequality

reduce inequality both within and between countries. This SDG

on age, gender, handicap, color, ethnicity, origin, religion, or
economic or other position within a country.
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
➢ "Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable," is
SDG 11's declared aim. The 17 SDGs recognize that actions in
one area have ramifications in other areas, and that progress
must strike a balance between social, economic, and
environmental sustainability.

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

term infrastructure, and universal access to essential services,
green and decent jobs, and improved quality of life.

human and institutional capability.

illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, and destructive
fishing practices, as well as implement science-based
management plans, in order to restore fish stocks as quickly as
possible, at the very least to levels that can produce maximum
sustainable yield.

as coordinated investment measures to achieve cross-border
sustainable development.
What are your Top 3 SDGs?

1. Goal 4: Quality Education

• We’ve chosen Quality Education, because if we’re going to relate it to our Local
matter which is The Philippines. It is a perfect one to tackled due to the DepEd’s quality
when it comes to Schedule, Facilities, Subjects and Grading system. We do not have
enough knowledge and insights regarding that, like how it works. But our question is will
the education system here in the Philippines be further developed? That’s why we
choose this, and one thing we know is that majority of the students are having a bad
experiencing in terms of education so, we need some development here.

2. Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

• We choose this because, Unemployment has been one of the major problems
here in the Philippines that is constantly rising especially now that we are in the middle
of pandemic. maybe due to overpopulation, or oversupply of labor force on certain
industries and because of the high standard’s required by some companies. Yet,
generally the Filipinos has been given a low-quality education connected to poverty
which has been the reason for choosing work over education. Now, we’re stuck in this
kind of Economic Growth where we cannot modernize anymore.

3. Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

• SDG goal number 9, to introduce a smart and tough establishment since most of
the properties here in the Philippines are unreliable and made from low quality materials
and it is unsafe especially when it comes to disaster and calamity.
When is the right time for you to contribute to the SDGs?

➢ As a first-year college in STI, one of the best thing we have experienced here is
to understand and to have enough knowledge regarding this sustainable development
goals in our first term. We became immediately open to such matters, and we think that
this is the right time for us to contribute in SDG, because we believe you don’t have to
be professional first to participate, as long as you have enough knowledge, and can
discern economic and social problems or issue, you have eagerness or willingness to be
part of this advocacy, that is the right time for you to contribute in the sustainable
development goals by doing even some simple things. You should ask yourself, If not
now then when?

How can you support the SDGs?

➢ We believe that anyone can make a crucial contribution for a positive social
change. We see individual’s commitment and undying hope as a unique level for this.
We all just need to take responsibility for our actions.
And as we said, we can contribute or support SDG’s by doing simple things such as,
promote any advocacy that aims to advance the sustainable development goals
especially using media because apart from being convenient, netizens are active there
24/7.

Or learn to practice some simple things at home like, switching off lights and unplugging
standby appliances when not being use, hanging clothes to dry instead of using a drier,
these are some of the ways to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

We can also choose to use reusable and eco-friendly alternatives instead of Single-use
products, particularly plastic ones, because it tends to end up in a landfill and through
ocean, causing harm to our environment and wildlife. These things actively work to
accelerate the achievement of SDG, to “access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable
energy for all,” this positively impacts 12 of the 17 goals.

Start Embracing this Sustainable Development Goals and educate our friends,
colleagues, and families on these Global Goals.
