ASSIGNIMENT OF GEO.
THE WORLD MAP SHOWING THE SPECIAL SEAS AND OCEANS

1. Red sea: The Red Sea is the saltiest sea of all the seas that connect to the ocean without even one
river meeting the sea. A popular hypothesis about the origins of the Red Sea's name is that it contains
cyanobacteria called Trichodesmium erythraeum, which turns the normally blue-green water a reddish-
brown. The color of course, is not intense and it varies across the expansive body of water but it’s
enough to give the sea the nickname… red sea.

2. Why is the Black Sea black?

It the sea was the first named by the ancient Greeks who called it “Inhospitable Sea” first named the
sea. The sea got this reputation because it was difficult to navigate, and hostile tribes inhabited its
shores. Later, after the successful development of the coast by Greek colonists, the sea was renamed
"Hospitable Sea."

The Black Sea has a depth of over 150 meters, and its waters are filled with hydrogen sulfide for almost
two kilometers. Therefore, in the deepest layers of its water there are no living things except sulfur
bacteria.

There are a number of hypotheses for why it was eventually called the Black Sea:

 Metal objects from ships, dead plants, and animal matter that sunk deeper than 150 meters for
a long period became covered with a black sludge due to the high concentration of hydrogen
sulfide in the sea.
 From the perspective of sailors, the sea was black due to severe storms in the winter, during
which the water is so dark it looks black.

3. Why is the White Sea white?

The White Sea is an inland sea in the north of the European part of Russia that belongs to the Arctic
Ocean. The White Sea is covered with ice for six to seven months every year.

Here some hypotheses about the White Sea's name:

 One theory suggests that the name comes from the fact that the sea is covered with ice most of
the year.

 Others believe that the name originates from the whitish color of the water, reflecting the
northern sky.

4. Why is the Yellow Sea yellow?

The Yellow Sea is a semi-enclosed marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean, off the east coast of Asia and to the
west of the Korean Peninsula. The Yellow Sea has high tides that can reach up to 10 meters.

A possible reason for its name may come from the distinctive brownish-yellow color of the water that
flows in from the Yellow River, which carries huge amounts of silt from the upper plains.

5. The Coral Sea: It takes its name from its coral formations of the Great Barrier Reef, the largest known
reef system in the world.

6. The Barents Sea: It takes its name from Dutch explorer William Barentsz. A Dutch navigator who was
the leader of a journey to the far north at the end of the sixteenth century. It is a shallow shelf sea, with
an average depth of 750ft and an important site for fishing and hydrocarbon exploration.

7. Dead sea: The Sea is called "dead" because its high salinity prevents macroscopic aquatic organisms,
such as fish and aquatic plants, from living in it, though minuscule quantities of bacteria and microbial
fungi are present. Sea Got Its Name

Simply put, the Dead Sea is "dead" because no aquatic animals can live in the water. This lack of marine
and plant life is the sole reason for the name.

8. Caspian Sea, Russian Kaspiyskoye More, Persian Darya-ye Khezer, world’s largest inland body of
water. It lies to the east of the Caucasus Mountains and to the west of the vast steppe of Central Asia.
The sea’s name derives from the ancient Kaspi peoples, who once lived in Transcaucasia to the west.
Among its other historical names, Khazarsk and Khvalynsk derive from former peoples of the region,
while Girkansk stems from Girkanos, “Country of the Wolves.”

9. Arabian Sea: this sea is located in the northern region of the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by Somalia
and the Arabian Peninsula to the west, by Iran and Pakistan to the north, and India to the east. The
Arabian Sea is also known as the Sea of Oman, and historically as the Persian Sea, the Erythraean Sea,
the Indian Sea, Sindhu Sagar, Sindh Sea, and the Akhzar Sea.

10.The Arabian Sea: is connected to the Red Sea via the Gulf of Aden and to the Persian Gulf via the Gulf
of Oman. It is believed to have served as an important trade route since the second or third millennium
BC.

The evidences which explain the Arabian sea:

 The Arabian Sea is named after the Arabian merchants who dominated the sea from the 9th
century to the late medieval period .

 The Arabian Sea covers a surface area of approximately 1,491,130 square miles.

 The maximum width of the Arabian Sea is 1,490 miles and its maximum depth is 15,262 feet.

 The largest river that flows into the Arabian Sea is the Indus River. Other rivers that flow into the
sea include the Narmada River, the Tapi River, and the Sabarmati River.

 Major ports of the Arabian Sea include India's Kandla Port, Okha Port, New Mangalore Port, Navi
Mumbai, and Mumbai Port, Pakistan's Gwandar Port and Port of Karachi, Oman's Port of
Salalah, and Iran's Chabahar Port.

 The Arabian Sea's largest islands include Yemen's Socotra, Oman's Masirah Island, India's
Lakshadweep, and Pakistan's Astola Island.

 Countries that have coastlines along the Arabian Sea include India, the Maldives, Pakistan,
Oman, Yemen, and Somalia.

 The International Task Force is known to use Oman's Port of Salalah as a base.

 The largest port of the Arabian Sea is India's Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai.

 The largest island in the Arabian Sea is Socotra Island, which is part of an archipelago containing
four islands.

 The Arabian Sea is considered to be one of the largest seas in the world.

 Three large peninsulas border the Arabian Sea, including the Horn of Africa, the Arabian
Peninsula, and the Indian Peninsula.

 From June to August the winds flow from the Indian Peninsula's south western region. From
September to November the wind reverses back. The climate of the Arabian Sea is controlled by
these monsoon winds each year.

 The Arabian Sea has high salinity because it does not receive a lot of rain and there are not
many rivers feeding it. The hot weather also contributes to the high salinity.
 The Arabian Sea has two basins - the Arab Basin and the Somali Basin - separated by the
Carlsberg Ridge.

 The algae sargassopsis zanardinni is endemic to the Arabian Sea and can't be found elsewhere in
the world.

 Marine life in the Arabian Sea includes shark, tuna, sardines, billfish, moonfish, and several
others, as well as green turtles, hawksbill turtles, and dugongs.

 Whales found in the Arabian Sea include blue whales, humpback whales, Minke whales, sperm
whales, and orca whales.

11. green lang sea: It actually got its name from Erik The Red, an Icelandic murderer who was
exiled to the island. He called it “Greenland” in hopes that the name would attract settlers. But
according to scientists, Greenland was actually quite green more than 2.5 million years ago
