6 Minute Delay Fuse
6 Minute Delay Fuse
TECHNICAL
INFORMATION:

The Time Delay Firing system is used in conjunction with a Pressure Activated
Firing Head or the HTD-BLAST system. The Time Delay System consists of the
time delay hardware, an igniter and a pyrotechnic time delay fuse. The igniter
will be contained in a TC-005 series detonator body or TC-044 CT Transfer Sub.
The single fuse system allows for a time of (6 minutes) between the activation
of the firing head to detonation of the perforating guns. This time interval
allows the bleeding off of the pressure used to activate the firing head to
establish an underbalance condition or to perform another needed operation
prior to perforation. In the event that more time is required, extra fuses may be
incorporated into the system using the Extended Time Delay Hardware. The
HTD-Blast System allows moving the BHA to different perforating intervals
when run on coiled tubing.

ADVANTAGES:

Used with a Pressure Actuated Firing Impact, the Time Delay can be utilized to:
• Obtain maximum use of under or overbalanced pressures
• Independently perforate selected zones
• Reduce costs by allowing the running of multiple guns without using gun
spacers
• Work in heavy mud systems
• Be used in producing completions, drillstem testing, and dual completions
• Increase operational time by the addition of time delay elements

Warning: The assembly of this tool requires the use of an

Explosive Device and all safety precautions must be adhered to and
observed! Only personnel trained in explosive handling procedures
should be allowed to arm this firing head assembly!

Warning: You must use the time delay fuse Installation Tool to

properly and SAFELY insert fuse/block into the fuse housing!

Note: Check all items against the parts list to be sure of having the
correct parts and quantities.

Note: Check for any damage to the parts which would prevent the part
from being assembled correctly, easily and safely.

Note: Each time delay fuse has a burn time of approximately 6

minutes @ 72° F / (22.2° C). Refer to the Delay Time vs. Temperature
chart in section 2.

1.0 Assembly - Single Fuse

1.1 Install the O-rings (items #4 and 5) on the Time Delay Fuse Housing (item #1) and the Fuse
Support Block (item #2). If running the 3-1/8” system (TC-043-3125-000), install the O-Rings
(Item #6) on the ends of the Fuse Support Block. Carefully unpack the Time Delay Fuse
(item B) and thread it into the Fuse Support Block. Torque the fuse to the support block with
a wrench.

6 Minute Delay Fuse

Apply a light amount of grease to the O-rings of the support block and install the block into
the housing up to the first O-ring.

Note: Do not tap, hammer or pound the fuse/support block into the
housing.

1.2 With the support block resting at the first O-ring, use the installation tools to press the time
delay fuse and support block into the housing.

Thread the Retention Nut into the housing.

Thread in the Pressing Rod carefully until it’s contacting the support block.

6 Minute Delay Fuse

1.3 Continue threading pressing rod until fuse and support block are fully seated in housing,
remove installation tool.

Note: Omit Step 1.4 if using the TDI XL Igniter

1.4 Take the Igniter Support Assembly (item #3) and separate it into it’s respective sections.
A top section and a bottom section. Be careful not to damage the small o-ring on the bottom
section. Unpack the Igniter (item A) and insert into the top section.
The surface of the igniter that has the printing on it, faces upward toward the firing pin and
the surface that is colored RED faces downward toward the top of the time delay fuse.

Reinstall bottom section and the support assembly is now ready to be installed into the
Detonator Body that will be used.

1.5 Choose the detonator body that will be used and insert the support assembly with igniter.
Apply grease to the threads and O-rings of the firing mechanism, and thread into the detonator
body, securing everything in place. This step should be done with the components in the
vertical position.

1.6 Apply grease to the threads and O-rings of the time delay fuse housing and thread it into the
firing mechanism/detonator body assembly.

The Pressure Firing Head with a single 6 Minute Time Delay Fuse is now complete and ready
to be threaded onto the Top Gun Sub.

6 Minute Delay Fuse

Warning: After operation of the tool, there may be trapped

pressure. Please follow disassembly procedures below.

Please be advised below is a detail report for the disassembling of a Coiled Tubing system using the
HTD-BLAST® System.
“Oilfield tools that are used in the wellbore can occasionally have trapped pressure inside when they
are removed to the surface either from exposure to hydrostatic pressures, applied pressures, or
pressures generated by the use of explosive components. This trapped pressure may occur inside
the 6 minute delay fuse housing (TC-043-3125-000 or TC-043-2750-000) used in perforating with the
Owen HTD- BLAST® System. Accordingly, caution should be taken when disassembling gun strings
that contain this housing. More specifically, subs should be broken at specific connections to avoid
having internal parts ejected in case there is trapped pressure.”
Reference the enclosed diagram (Figures 1&2) for a proper procedure for disassembling your work
string after perforating. The HTD-BLAST® system should not be disassembled at the well site, but
back at the shop.
• Break the top gun sub (1) from the gun barrel (2), leaving the gun barrel still threaded to the top of
the CT sub (6). The end plate will prevent any parts from being ejected if there is trapped pressure
in the fuse housing.

• Break the connection between the top gun sub (3) and gun barrel (4) that is threaded into the bottom
of the delay fuse housing (5), leaving the top sub in the fuse housing. This top sub will retain the delay
fuse in its housing, in case of pressure, during transportation back to shop.

• Leave the top gun sub (3) (in the fuse housing), the fuse housing (5), the CT sub (6) and the gun
barrel (2), in that order, threaded together while still on location. The diagram shows the breakdown
configuration (refer. Figure 2) for transportation back to your shop.

• Once back at your shop, Clear area of all unnecessary personal. Firmly retain the assembly in a vise.

• Stand off to the side of the assembly as you disassemble and ensure no personnel or obstacles are
in line with the assembly that may get hurt or damaged in case a part does eject from pressure.

• IMPORTANT: Break the connection (A) between the CT sub (6) and the top of the fuse housing
(5) FIRST. Carefully unthread the connection until both o-rings are exposed, while being aware of
pressure that may vent. If there is trapped pressure you should hear it escaping at this time and if
there is pressure, allow enough time to bleed completely off. Separate the components.

• Remove top sub (3) from bottom of fuse housing (5) in the same matter as the previous step, watching
for pressure once the two o-rings clear.

• Repeat with the CT sub (6) and gun barrel (2).

• All parts can now be broken down, cleaned, and redressed for the next operation.
