Social Cognitive Theory

The Social Cognitive Theory was conceptualized by Edwin Holt in 1931 and
was later improved by Albert Bandura. The theory states that the environment
that an individual grew up and where the individual studies affect the behavior
of the individual. A social context can influence one’s learning Nickerson
(2022). The behavior of one is affected by the behavior of those around him.
The behavior also affects the results the individual may create.
In the framework below the first variable is the environmental aspect. In this
study the researchers would focus on the environment of the classroom rather
than the home. Second, is the behavior which tells the researchers what
students do during classes. Third, is attention span, which tells the researchers
how much and how long the students focus on the discussion. Fourth, is
problem solving-skills, which tells the researchers how good the students are at
solving the Mathematical problems given to them. Lastly, the results, which
tells the researcher how good or bad the students’ problem-solving skills.
During the interview with the Senior High School teachers that teach a math
related subject, one of them, Ma’am Karylle mentioned that when one student
loses focus the rest follows. As what happened in the sample earlier, the
environmental aspect affects the behavior of the students when it comes to
discussions. The behavior of the student later affects how he or she will listen
to the discussion with depth and how long do they intent to listen. The
attention span as stated may affect the problem-solving skills. The problem-
solving skills will later affect the result or the performance of the student which
may affect their behavior and the cycle may continue.
The researchers have learned and solidified with this theory that there are
many factors which affect attention span. Yet what is more important is that
the researchers have learned that the problem-solving skills and results are
really affected by attention span. The new discovery, however, is that the
results and reward in turn affect the behavior.
