Attention Span after Online learning

Before the pandemic, online learning is not that much used. The

students claim that their attention span is affected by their surroundings

like their teachers and the environment of the school. For the teachers,

however, any attention problems the students face are caused by their

own behavior. Cicekci, M. A., & Sadik, F (2019)

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced an immediate transition, in most

places, from face-to-face teaching in classrooms and lecture theaters to

online-teaching on various video conference and social media platforms.

Because of its suddenness, little knowledge or guidelines existed for

online teaching (de Vries, 2021). Reyes T. (2020) stated that before the

pandemic the student’s attention span is on the lower side and the

online learning will just make it worse. Online learning has decreased

the motivation of students. Balan, A. K. & Montemayor, T. A. (2020). The

students have a hard time giving their attention to the materials given to

them. The interactivity of the students greatly changed during online

learning, Geri, N. (2017). Its value is even greater and how it affects the

performance is different. The greater the interactivity the greater the

performance,
The online learning has affected the environment and behavior of the

students. Now that it is face-to-face the effects can be seen more clearly.

Mallari Z. et al. (2022) stated that despite all the events it is still the

students that will determine their behavior and where to put their

attention. The increase in technology truly hampered the attention-span

of the students. Ištvanović I. (2021) technology has increased the

number of distractions available to people and the pandemic has

made us to rely more on technology. The attention span, even without

the online learning, will decrease. It only affected the attention span

more and usually for the worse.

Synthesis

The researchers have learned that the attention span of students

have decreased. The technology is one of the key factors on the

change of the attention span of the students. Online learning,

especially during the pandemic when it was enforced, just amplified

the effect. The lack of social interaction also mitigated the motivation

of the students.

It is stated, however, that it is within the student how will their

attention span would fare. The other external factors would still have

an effect. But it is the students attitude and behavior that is the

greatest determinant if their attention span.
