Short Introduction

Teaching is like building society. Just like society, the purpose of teaching is to provide people
with an enhanced quality of life that is significantly superior to that which they would achieve
without learning.

Characteristic 1
Just like building a society, teaching needs to have a solid foundation. This means
assessing the learners’ learning characteristics, prior experiences as well as
misconceptions and removing any barriers to success in learning. As a teacher, I always
have to make sure that the learning activities that I implement in class are well-planned
and are suited to the characteristics of my students. This also is true with the learning
materials that are used in the delivery of the lesson. Another way by which I lay the
foundation is by presenting to the learners the goals, standards, and competencies at the
beginning of the unit and the learning objectives at the beginning of each lesson so they
themselves know the direction of the teaching-learning process. Coupled with this is the
use of diagnostics assessments in the form of prior knowledge assessment and/or using a
map of conceptual change in order to see where the students are coming from, what
conceptions and misconceptions they have, and the emphasis or changes I need to do in
order to respond to their interest and needs.

Characteristic 2
Norms and standards must also be set, communicated, implemented, and assessed
in the process of building a society. This is to ensure that order and peaceful
coexistence will prevail in society. In the case of teaching, rules and standards are
also set to guide students in their conduct in the classroom in order to safeguard
the order and smooth flowing of the learning activities. Furthermore, such
standards and norms are also the teachers’ tools in measuring students’ learning,
successes, and challenges. This is why as a teacher I need to facilitate my students
towards the achievement of standards. To do this, I made use of the Understanding
by Design Framework which allowed me to identify first the desired learning
outcome, secondly, determine acceptable pieces of evidence, and lastly, plan for
learning experiences and instruction. Following the said framework ensures that
there would be alignment and intentionality in learning activities that are given to
the students.

Characteristic 3
Lastly, building society and learning both celebrates and considers diversity. A
society composed of members who are 100% similar had never existed in history.
This is because human beings are unique from one another due to differences in
genes, environment, and preferences. This is also true when it comes to learning.
Classrooms are composed of students who are completely different from one
another- in terms of intellect, talents, interest, strengths, and weaknesses. Teaching
then is an act of inclusivity where all learners are afforded equal opportunity to
develop holistically. In order to address this, students’ individual differences must
be considered in the teaching-learning process. To put this into practice, I use some
approaches to respond to the diversity of my students. This includes conducting
profiling to know the strength, interest, and preference of my students which
eventually guided me in the planning and preparation of my learning activities. At
some point, I also vary the content, process, and output that is given to the
students in order to meet their interests, readiness, and abilities.

Closing Statement
Teaching is like building a society. It needs a solid foundation and has norms
and standards and celebrates and consider diversity.
