iii. I want to work for you.

iv. What’s your name

I was still a thief when I met Anil. And though only 15, I was an experienced and fairly
successful hand.
Anil was watching a wrestling match when I approached him. He was about 25 - a tall,
lean fellow - and he looked easy-going, kind and simple enough for my purpose. I hadn’t had
much luck of late and thought I might be able to get into the young man’s confidence. “You
look a bit of a wrestler yourself,” I said. A little flattery helps in making friends.
“So do you,” he replied, which put me off for a moment because at that time I was
rather thin.
“Well,” I said modestly, “I do wrestle a bit.”
“What’s your name?”
“Hari Singh,” I lied. I took a new name every month. That kept me ahead of the police
and my former employers.
After this introduction, Anil talked about the well-oiled wrestlers who were grunting,
lifting and throwing each other about. I didn’t have much to say. Anil walked away. I followed
casually. “Hello again,” he said.
I gave him my most appealing smile. “I want to work for you,” I said.
“But I can’t pay you.”
I thought that over for a minute. Perhaps I had misjudged my man.
I asked, “Can you feed me?”
“Can you cook?”
“I can cook,” I lied again.
“If you can cook, then maybe I can feed you.”

2) What things in nature teach us the following ?

Nothing is impossible to achieve
We saw small bits of grass peeping through the small cracks in a concrete pavement.
It left us thinking : however impossible things may look, there is always
an opening...
We saw a tree bare of all leaves in the cold winter months. We thought its chapter was
over. But three months passed, spring set in and the tree was back to
its green majesty once again, full of leaves, flowers, birds and life. What if we too had the
conviction that, however difficult things are right now, it will not remain so for ever. Remember,
this too shall pass.
We saw an army of ants lugging a fly which was at least ten times the ant’s size. The
ants organized themselves around the fly, lifted it on frail feelers and carried it to quite a
distance. Their teamwork and perseverance were impressive. What if we too are consistent,
organized, focused...Spider webs are delicate, yet very strong. A rainbow colours the entire
sky. Oysters take in a grain of sand they open up with a
pearl. Innumerable stars shine across the infinite sky. Clouds take new shapes with every
passing moment. The wind makes trees dance with unhindered passion.
Water, without a hint of ego, changes its form according to the dictates of the sun and the
wind. When we see a caterpillar turn into a butterfly, a flower turn into a fruit, we experience
the alchemy of nature... we touch it and become gold ourselves.

His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms.
Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon’s mouth.

Animals

I think I could turn and live with animals, they are

so placid and self-contain’d
I stand and look at them long and long.
They do not sweat and whine about their condition,
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,
Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented w
 ith
the mania of owning things.
Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that
lived thousands of years ago,
Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth.
So they show their relations to me and I accept them,
They bring me tokens of myself, they evince
them plainly in their possession
I wonder where they get those tokens,
Did I pass that way huge times ago and negligently drop them?

Write how did the stout man examine the donkey?
On the final day of the circus,a stout man with a navy blue suit stretched tightly upon
him came confidently through the entrance. He paused in front of the donkey and subjected
the animal to a detailed survey. He pursed his lips and shook his head, then moved back so
that he could look at him from the rear. He moved round to the other side of the donkey and
examined him from there. He completed the encircling of the donkey by a long look at his
head. Now there was nothing more he wished to know about this donkey. In the same
movement he made to turn away, he let his hand fall heavily on the animal’s back. It was the
eight thousandth pat of the day. The donkey had seemed asleep but the sudden weight of the
man’s hand upon him affected him as if it were some signal for which he had been long
waiting. He lifted his heavy head with a jerk, turned, and snapped at the man’s arm with teeth
that went off like a rabbit trap. They closed on the sleeve of the man’s coat and ripped from the
material a ragged patch of blue cloth that remained projecting from the donkey’s mouth as the
animal turned his head away to continue his dreams. The man was astounded. He staggered
back amongst the people with started eyes and open mouth. He clutched his arm with his
hand and looked at the people for confirmation of the amazing thing that had happened to him.
‘He bit me !’ he exclaimed in horrified tones, then added, as he looked unbelievingly at the
donkey, ‘What a vicious brute !’.
