THEME 1: REALISATION OF A TURNING
I. Definition:
Turning is the process by which a cutting tool removes material from the outer diameter of a
rotating workpiece. The main objective of turning is to reduce the workpiece diameter to the desired
dimension.

II. Calculations involved to know the desired diameter of the workpiece

The aim of Manipulation is to obtained a

hexagonal shape on the head of the center

III. MANIPULATION:
 Objective: Realizing a turning to obtain a diameter of 11.5mm on the workpiece:
 Materials used:
Lathe machine, cutting tool bit, working piece, water, and Vernier caliper:

 Operation Mode:
1. Insert the workpiece inside the chuck by mounting it in air (as illustrated on the fig2,
below)
2. Install the cutting tool bit on the compound rest
3. Set the tool bit to the right height center
4. Input the required cutting speed at 200 turn per minute
5. Start the machine and
6. First apply the facing operation on the piece.
7. Stop the machine
8. Arrange the compound rest such that the tool bit lies perpendicular to the axis of the
workpiece
9. Tangent the tool on the surface of revolution of the piece, and start the machine
10. Turn the carriage hand wheel in a uniform continues motion to move the tool to the end
of the workpiece.
11. During the cutting process, keep supplying water on the tool bit to cool down the tool,
protecting it.
12. Measure the workpiece diameter with a Vernier calipper and calculate the amount of
material to be removed
13. Take passes of 2mm each and repeat step 10, 11, and 12 all over until the desired
diameter of 11.5mm is obtained.

THEME 2: TRHEADING
Definition
Thread cutting on the lathe is a process that produces a helical ridge of uniform section on the
workpiece. This is performed by taking successive cuts with a threading tool bit the same shape as the
thread form required.

Calculations involved:
1
Here we have to calculate the depth first by using the formula depth= of external diameter
10th
Here our external diameter is 12mm, Hence the depth is thus 1.2mm to remove.

Manipulations:
Objective: To produce threads on a workpiece
Materials needed:
Lathe Machine, Threading tool bit, Work piece, Dry lubrication oil, Shaft.

Operation Mode:

1. Mount the work piece on the chuck, using the mix mounting system (Length of the piece
very much longer than the diameter).
2. Set the speed to about one third of the speed used for turning.
3. Set the quick change gearbox for the required pitch in threads.
4. Install the threading tool bit and set the height to the lathe center point.
5. Set the tool bit and a right angles to the work piece.
6. Produce a very small chamfer on the workpiece.
7. Activate the automatic mode of the machine.
8. Mark the starting the point on the micrometer using a pencil.
9. Start the machine by pressing the starting handle downward.
10. Look carefully as the tool do the cuts right to the desired length and stop the machine.
11. Remove the tool closer to the piece by turning the compound rest handle clockwise.
12. Clean up the tool bit.
13. Start the machine by pressing the starting handle upward so it go backward from the working
material automatically.
14. Turn the compound rest handle anticlockwise bringing it closer to the piece but not touching it.
15. Once the tool arrives the edge of the chamfer end of the piece, we stop the machine, and return
to the marked point, wipe the mark off, and take a new pass of 0.2mm that is 2 divisions.
16. Repeat step 8-14 above 12 times to obtain the thread.
17. Stop the machine and unmount the piece.
18. Remove the piece and do the finishing using a shaft.
