APPENDIX A - ACCEPTANCE AND FUNCTIONAL CHECK FLIGHT AIRCREW CHECKLIST . . . . . . . . . A-1

i
TO 1C-26(R)B-6CF-1

SCOPE
This document is to be used in conjunction with the normal procedures of the USAF RC-26B Flight Manual and
Aircrew Checklist. The expanded RC-26B Functional Check Flight Procedures (FCF) with operational mainte-
nance guidelines are provided in this publication.

SOUND JUDGEMENT
Instructions in this manual are for a crew inexperienced in the operation of this airplane. This manual provides
the best possible operating instructions under most circumstances, but it is a poor substitute for sound judgment.
Multiple emergencies, adverse weather, terrain, etc., may require modification of the procedures. This manual is
not for inexperienced crew.

PERMISSIBLE OPERATIONS
The flight manual takes a positive approach and normally states only what you can do. Unusual operations or
configurations (such as asymmetrical loading) are prohibited unless specifically covered herein. Clearance must
be obtained from the flight manual manager before any questionable operation is attempted which is not
specifically permitted in this manual.

HOW TO BE ASSURED OF HAVING LATEST DATA

You must remain constantly aware of the latest manual and checklists updates. A listing of current publications
may be found on the internet. http://toindex-s.robins.af.mil/toindex/.

STANDARDIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT

Standardization assures that the scope and arrangement of all Flight Manuals are identical. The manual is divided
into fairly independent sections to simplify reading.

INTERIM SAFETY AND OPERATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

Interim Safety and Operational Supplements will be transmitted in message format through the message center. It
is the units responsibility to inform their MAJCOM if they are not receiving interim supplements.

CHECKLISTS
The flight manual contains itemized procedures with necessary amplifications. The checklist contains itemized
procedures without the amplification. Primary line items in the flight manual and checklist are identical. If a
formal safety or operational supplement affects your checklist, the affected checklist page will be attached to the
supplement. Cut it out and insert it over the affected page, but never discard the checklist page in case the
supplement is rescinded and the page is needed.

HOW TO GET PERSONAL COPIES

Each flight crew member is entitled to personal copies of the Flight Manual and Checklists. The required
quantities should be ordered before you need them to assure their prompt receipt. Check with your supply
personnel - it is their job to fulfill your Technical Order requests. Basically, the required Technical Orders must
be ordered using JCALS System. Technical Orders 00-5-1, AF Technical Order System, provide details. Make
sure a system is established at your base to deliver these publications to the flight crews immediately upon receipt.

ii
TO 1C-26(R)B-6CF-1

FLIGHT MANUAL AND CHECKLIST BINDERS

Loose leaf binders and sectionalized tabs are available for use with your manual. These are obtained through local pur-
chase procedures and are listed in the Federal Supply Schedule (FSC Group 75, Office Supplies, Part 1). Binders are
also available for carrying your checklist. These binders contain plastic envelopes into which individual checklist pages
are inserted. They are available in two capacities and are obtained through normal Air Force supply. Check with your
supply personnel for assistance in securing these items.

WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, AND NOTES

The following definitions apply to warnings, cautions, and notes found throughout the manual:

WARNING

Operating procedures, techniques, etc., which may result in personal injury or loss of
life if not carefully followed.

CAUTION

Operating procedures, techniques, etc., which may result in damage to equipment if

not carefully followed.

NOTE
An operating procedure, technique, etc, which is considered essential to emphasize.

Two or more Warnings, Cautions, or Notes placed in sequence are denoted by the use of a large dot on the left margin.
The heading (WARNING, CAUTION, or NOTE) is not repeated.

USE OF WORDS SHALL, WILL, AND MAY

The following definitions apply to words shall, will, and may found throughout the manual:

Shall and Will - Used to indicate a mandatory requirement.

May - Indicates an acceptable or suggested means of accomplishments.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITY - TO LET US KNOW

Every effort is made to keep the flight manual current. Review conference with operating personnel and a constant review
of accident and flight test reports assure inclusion of the latest data in the manual. However, we cannot correct an error
unless we know of its existence. In this regard, it is essential that you do your part. Comments, corrections, and questions
regarding this manual or any phase of the flight manual program are welcomed. These should be forwarded through your
Major Command on AF Form 847 to Oklahoma City OC-ALC/GKSSB, Tinker AFB, OK 73145-3018.

INTRODUCTION
1. These Acceptance and Functional Check Flight procedures have the following purposes:

a. To assure that the aircraft is airworthy and capable of mission accomplishment.

b. To augment and expand upon data contained in the Airplane Flight Manual (T.O. 1C-26B-1) and the Pilot’s
Flight Crew Checklist (T.O. 1C-26B-1CL-1), to provide the flight crew with operating procedures, limitations,
and conditions to be noted during Acceptance/Functional Check Flights.

c. Identify criteria to be used by the USAF in accepting new production aircraft, check accomplishment of speci-
fied maintenance actions, or when required to verify correction of a flight/ground discrepancy.

2. Reference Technical Order (T.O.) 1-1-300, Acceptance/Functional Check Flight and Maintenance Operational
Checks and ANGI 21-101, Maintenance Management of Aircraft, paragraph 10.19, prior to conducting and ACF
or FCF.

3. Acceptance Check Flights (ACF) are performed to accept new production aircraft from the Manufacturer, to func-
tionally check aircraft being transferred between units or as directed by Maintenance. Normally, only the asterisked
(*) items in the Acceptance and Functional Check Flight procedures will be completed on and ACF.

4. Functional Check Flights (FCF) are performed to accept or check accomplishment of specified maintenance actions
(see "Conditions Requiring Functional Check Flight") or when required to verify correction of a flight/ground
discrepancy. Following overhaul/depot level maintenance, all items in the Acceptance and Functional Flight Test
procedures should be completed. However, if an FCF is only required to verify a specific maintenance action or
aircraft modification, the FCF profile may be limited to checking only those systems/items disturbed by mainte-
nance, inspection, or modification activities.

5. In conducting the Check Flight, it is not necessary that each item be accomplished in the sequence outlined.

6. Upon completion of the check flight, the pilot shall mark the AIRCRAFT RELEASED or the AIRCRAFT NOT RE-
LEASED block in Appendix A, whichever is applicable, and sign the certification to indicate successful completion
of the ACF/FCF. All discrepancies discovered during the course of the flight check will be recorded in the AFTO
Form 781.

7. Effectivity: This manual covers the USAF RC-26B aircraft.

Used where required to indicate the end of coded information

BLOCK 25 Indicates information is applicable to aircraft with Self Protection System and Ballistic Armor (STCs
SA919403-D AND SA9195SC-D)
BLOCK 20 Indicates information is applicable to aircraft without Self Protection System and Ballistic Armor

8. Normal configuration for RC-26B Functional Check Flight (FCF) is with turret and fairing for BLOCK 20 and
BLOCK 25 aircraft.

CONDITIONS REQUIRING FUNCTIONAL CHECK FLIGHT

A Functional Check Flight is required for any condition for which probable satisfactory performance in-flight cannot
be verified by maintenance ground checks. An FCF is also required where the risk of malfunction in flight is high or
where malfunctions of the affected system or component would jeopardize safety of flight beyond reasonable limits. No
passengers, crewmembers, or maintenance personnel should be on the aircraft beyond those required for the FCF. Fuel
should be the minimum required to safely accomplish the flight. The following guidelines shall be used to define FCF
requirements.

PROPULSION
ENGINE. Exchange or removal/reinstallation of an engine (unless engine removal was solely to facilitate other main-
tenance, none of the engine components listed below are exchanged, and the engine is reinstalled at the same wing
position).

FUEL CONTROL. Exchange of the fuel control unit.

ENGINE GEAR CASE. Entry into the engine gear case.

PROPELLER GOVERNOR. Exchange of the propeller governor or any external Negative Torque System (NTS) com-
ponent (except associated plumbing).

PROPELLER. Exchange or removal/reinstallation of a propeller (unless the same propeller is reinstalled on the same
engine at the same wing position without any tear-down of the propeller and the propeller is indexed to the engine mount
flange before removal and reinstalled in the same orientation). Every propeller FCF requires an inflight shutdown and
restart.

CAUTION

Do not perform FCF or ACF on engine or propeller components with a fuel bypass
valve failure.

FLIGHT CONTROLS
PRIMARY FLIGHT CONTROLS. Exchange of any primary flight control surface (rudder, elevator, aileron, stabilizer,
or flap.

STABILIZER TRIM. Exchange of a stabilizer trim actuator.

STALL AVOIDANCE SYSTEM (SAS). Exchange or recalibration of a SAS computer.

LANDING GEAR
LANDING GEAR STRUTS. Removal/reinstallation of a main or nose landing gear strut assembly. Replacement of strut
seals or the lower strut assembly (piston and axle) does not require a FCF. Removal/reinstallation or exchange of a land-
ing gear actuator does not require a FCF.

LANDING GEAR DOORS. Exchange or extensive adjustment of any landing gear door.

OTHER
OVERHAUL/DEPOT LEVEL MAINTENANCE. Major maintenance action, such as flight control rigging, structural
repairs, systems modifications, etc., which could appreciably change flight characteristics or substantially affect opera-
tion of the aircraft in flight.

5. Landing Gear Normal Operation.

Time landing gear normal extension and retraction cycles at approximately 170 KIAS (4 to 8 seconds extension,
5 to 12 seconds retraction are normal).
6. Landing Gear Manual Extension.

a. Perform this check with gear control handle in the UP position, the gear control circuit breaker in, and the air-
speed at approximately 170 KIAS.

b. Rotate the landing gear emergency release lever aft slowly. Check that main landing gear position lights indicate
unsafe nearly simultaneously, that all three gear lights indicate in transit before approximately 3/4 travel of the
emergency release lever, and that the lever will remain in its full travel position.

c. Return the emergency release lever to its normal position and check all gear up. (Some hydraulic fluid will vent
overboard.)

7. Engine Shutdown.
Use Preplanned Engine Shutdown In-Flight Checklist from T.O. 1C-26B-1, Section III.
Preparation for Shutdown (Selected Engine).
a. Bleed Air Switch - OFF
b. Prop Sync - Takeoff & Landing
c. Power Lever: Set 1/4 inch forward of Flight Idle (Until landing gear warning horn is silenced).
d. Speed Lever 97% RPM
e. Sensor Power - AS REQUIRED

While engine is cooling down:

f. Generator Switch - OFF (Check for opposite Generator Load Less Than 300-Amps)

NOTE
If BLOCK 25 and sensor equipment is powered, recommend EO/IR POWER - OFF

g. Current Limiter Check - COMPLETE

NOTE
Engine shutdown and airstart will be conducted at a minimum of 5000 feet AGL.
h. Shut down one engine by pulling engine stop and feather control out just far enough to make the fuel flow drop to
zero. As the RPM decays, check the NTS and Auto Ignition systems operate normally. Let the engine windmill
until:

• The EGT reaches 200°C

• The RPM reaches 30% RPM, or
• One minute, whichever occurs first.
i. Pull engine stop and feather control full aft and check that propeller feathers.
The Ignition light should go out within 60 seconds.
j. Accelerate to 180 KIAS (Normally requires a descent). Propeller rotation up to 15 RPM forward is acceptable.
RPM can be determined by counting the number of prop blades passing a given point in 15 seconds.
k. Slow to 115 KIAS. To maintain safe flight, set flaps to 1/2 at speeds below 160 KIAS for this portion of the
flight check. Check for backward rotation of the propeller. A feathered propeller should not rotate backwards
at speeds above 115 ±3 KIAS.
l. Return the stop and feather control full forward. Perform Airstart in accordance with T.O. 1C-26B-1.
8. Engine Airstart.
a. Speed Lever - 97% RPM
b. Power Lever - Set 1/4 inch forward of Flight Idle

1. Autopilot/Flight Director.

a. Engagement with Flight Director Off - With the flight director OFF and the autopilot disengaged, establish a
bank angle between 10 and 30 degrees. Engage the autopilot and observe the aircraft roll wings level while
maintaining the existing pitch attitude.

b. Heading Preselect/Hold - Engage the flight director heading mode and verify that the autopilot and flight direc-
tor command steering to the heading selected with the heading marker.

c. Pitch Attitude Hold - Vary the Pitch attitude using the autopilot vertical trim control.

d. Control Wheel Steering - Depress the CWS button on the control wheel and change the aircraft’s pitch and bank
angles. Release the CWS button and verify the attitude is maintained.

e. Climb/Indicated Airspeed Hold - Engage the flight director climb mode and verify the autopilot and flight director
command a 150 to 135 KIAS climb. Engage Indicated Airspeed mode and verify that the autopilot and flight
director command an airspeed change selected through use of the autopilot vertical trim switch (two knots per
click).

f. Descent/Vertical Speed Hold - Engage flight director descent mode and verify that the autopilot and flight direc-
tor command a 1000 FPM descent. After stabilizing at 1000 FPM, verify that the autopilot and flight director
switch to the vertical speed mode and maintain the vertical speed selected on the pilot’s Altitude/Vertical Speed
Indicator.

g. Altitude Select/Hold - While descending to an altitude preselected on the pilot’s Altitude/Vertical Speed Indi-
cator, select Altitude Select mode on the flight director control panel. Observe the autopilot and flight director
command level- off at the selected altitude, automatically switch to the altitude hold mode, and maintain the
selected altitude.

Change 2 P-23
TO 1C-26(R)B-6CF-1

h. Navigation (VOR/TACAN) - Set up an intercept to a VOR/TACAN course several miles away. Select Naviga-
tion mode on the flight director control panel. Verify that the autopilot and flight director command steering
to intercept and track the course.

i. Vertical Navigation - Set up a vertical navigation track on the KNS-660 Flight Management System and engage
VNAV on the flight director control panel. Observe the aircraft pitch down to maintain the desired track. Verify
illumination of the ALT ARM annunciator.

2. Flight Idle rate of Descent.

NOTE
This procedure helps determine the proper flight idle power setting for landing. A lower
flight idle fuel flow is required for an aircraft configured without the turret. Conversely,
because of the additional drag, a higher flight idle fuel flow is required for an aircraft
configured with the turret. Regardless of turret configuration, a flight idle fuel flow
rate that produces a 1700 to 1850 fpm rate of descent will result in a proper landing
torque for that configuration.

a. Establish landing configuration:

(1) Gear - down

(2) Flaps - down

(3) Power levers - flight idle

(4) Speed levers - 100% RPM

(5) Set Bleed Air Switches to LOW

b. Trim to be stabilized at target airspeed 1.4VSO when descending through 8500 feet pressure altitude (29.92
in. Hg set).

c. Determine altitude lost from 8500 feet in exactly one minute. Rate of descent must average between 1700 and
1850 fpm for two checks on opposite headings. Record data on Appendix A checklist.

d. Note fuel flows and torques at end of each descent to establish basis for any adjustments. Record data on Ap-
pendix A checklist.
