The Video Economics of Happiness educates us regarding the ecological

emergency, monetary emergency and emergency of human soul we are
confronting. It discusses things we need to take care of and consider them in long
run. Moreover, in the documentary the author Helena Nordberg- Hodge starts by
telling of economy of ladakh is effected by the consumerism. Earlier in ladakh the
people living there use to have enough leisure time they used to have very huge
and comfortable houses. Furthermore, she also mentioned that earlier in ladakh
there was no one who stayed hungry or was unemployed, there was full
employment. Earlier their way of life was more joyous and sustainable as
compare to ours. As the video progress she mentioned that the way of life in
ladakh completely changed as by 1970 ladakh came under the influence of
romanticized view of western consumerism. this made people of ladakh thing that
there were backward and poor. Therefore, today ladakh faces a number of
problems such as pollution divisiveness and even depression. People thinks that
globalization is bringing people together and bringing happiness where as in fact it
is not bringing people closer but creating a type of completion among people as
nowadays one is buying things to not fulfill their needs but to get satisfaction that
he or she is superior among people living with him or near him. Moreover,
nowadays companies and corporation are more focused on making profit rather
than bringing people together. In addition, a lonely person is never happy and the
people who are actually happy are those who rely on someone else. And
globalization is creating a lonely planet. Globalization is causing the end of
resources. In markets we can see number of products coming from different part
of the world, and not produced domestically. These products are imported and
they cause pollution as they come through ships. However, if we stop importing
the commodities but instead start producing them this will reduced the price of
good as well as there will be no import duties and the other taxes associated with
the imported goods and it will also reduce air as well as water pollution.
There is a problem that the big firms or large scale firms in the market causes
small firms to go out of the market which results in unemployment due to which
people commit criminal activities such as robbery and stealing leading to increase
in un certainity and terrorism rate in the world. People sees economic growth is
the answer to all problems we are facing but the solution to the problem is that
we should start localizing our economy we need to have have locally made
clothes and food to counter the problem. Moreover, the local business will also
create employment oppourtunairites and will reduce inequality. Localization if
we want to create a better society.
