Tikbubulan: Transition from Folk Song to Creative Dance

Erwin Oscar P. Ripalda

The researcher in his article wants to develop a dance using a traditional song, the
folksong. The researcher made use of the notion of mimicking a bird in the folksong. The bird’s
stretches, flying tricks with other birds, courtship rituals, and general hopping were all included
in this as part of the dance steps. Which these qualities were all personified by the Waray
people’s lighthearted or playful demeanor. There are numerous unfinished and obscure
folksongs. The researcher neglects to acknowledge our own local folksong that depicts the daily
lives of the people in various communities and instead places emphasis on the unpublished
folksongs of our locals that are still being kept secret at the time.

After reading the article, I have realized that there are really talented people and creative
in their own way. It really shows that he wants to preserve the Philippine culture. Creating or
developing your own dance is not an easy one. You need to research more and think of what will
be the impact of your dance on the people. We all know that in dance or performing a dance we
give a message or meaning of what we want to portray. But the researcher in the article proves
that he could do more, he arranges some musical accompaniment that will fit to dance, the basis
of his dance steps was also from Francisca Aquino Reyes, and he also added some movements
based on his interpretation of the folksong. The costumes, in terms of colors and design, are
similar to male Tikbubulan birds, which were also patterned on Visayas peasant farmer’s
garments.
Researchers about folk dancing a rare nowadays because for some this might not be
useful for the learners or people anymore since today’s generation is different from before.
Others are into Korean music, but the researcher in the article proves that there are still people
who want to preserve our own culture and prove that folk dance is a way of life that can be found
in every culture. It is a part of people’s life and comes from the daily life of people.
