!! Babesiosis (also referred to as piroplasmosis) is caused by
different species of protozoan intracellular parasites of the
Babesiidea family.
Babesiosis is the most important and widely distributed tick-borne
Clinical signs
o Lethargy, depression, fever
o Pale mucous membranes (sometimes with petechiae or
ecchymoses)
o Jaundice
o Brown or dark-orange coloured urine
o Splenomegaly, hepatomegaly
o Tachypnoea (due to metabolic acidosis)
o Hypotensive shock
o Anuria, oliguria
When to suspect infection? o Lymphadenomegaly in chronic cases
Depending on the severity of clinical signs, body systems involved o Neurological signs (seizures, vestibular syndrome, coma)
(and the disease), babesiosis can be classified as uncomplicated
or complicated. Clinical pathology
o Uncomplicated babesiosis has an acute or subacute onset, o Mild to severe anaemia
with mild to moderate anaemia and thrombocytopenia; and o Thrombocytopenia
